Penguincw: Geez just 31 moves to bring down Ivanchuk. It has to be at least 40.
Jan-03-12  hangTheQueen: WhyChess's Houdini gives 31 ... b5
32 Ne3 Qxc3 33 Rxc3 Rxc3 34 Bxb4 as the best continuation, where Ivanchuk gets two pawns for the piece. I wonder what he saw that he felt justified the sacrifice? If it was the passers on b and d, I would think he would play it out a little to see if he could leverage them for an advantage, or at least a draw. GM play is far beyond me. Just curious if Ivanchuk had some grand plan that he gave up on after reflection or if it was just a terrific blunder.
Jan-03-12  Gotank: Maybe he was thinking about 31...Qa7, threatening b5 and/or d5. That seems to win back the piece or at least get perpetual. I have no idea what was the plan if white captured with Queen instead.
Jan-03-12  kdogphs: I saw that 3oth move and realized that everyone makes mistakes every now and then... even BASIC ONES!!!
Jan-03-12  Marmot PFL: 30...Nxc4 was a mistake, but white would still have to play well to win so it's surprising that black resigned.
Jan-03-12  luzhin: My guess is that Ivanchuk had earlier missed that after 31...b5 32.Ne3 the g1-a7 diagonal is blocked and thus there can be no check with the Black Q picking up White's Queen on c3 with the R on c8. This is a terrible blunder by his standards and I imagine the highly sensitive Ivanchuk resigned in shock.
Jan-03-12  wordfunph: 30...Nxc4? arghhh!

my idol Chucky's third loss in a row :(

Jan-03-12  King Death: Unfotunately we've seen both good Chucky and bad Chucky in this event, since he threw away his game against Nakamura. This just shows it can happen to even the great ones.
Jan-06-12  ex0duz: <30...Nxc4 was a mistake, but white would still have to play well to win so it's surprising that black resigned.>

Black lost a piece for nothing(ie one pawn and no compensation whatsoever). At this level, or even amateur level, a piece down is usually game over. Especially when you have nothing to show for the sac.. no initiative, no threats, NOTHING. To finish it off would have been tirivial for someone rated 2729
