Jun-19-14 | | fgh: <JointheArmy: This is what top GM's need to play against Magnus, instead of the Ruy Lopez (which runs into a Berlin every single time).> Carlsen's loss had nothing to do with the opening. He underestimated/overlooked white's mating threats, and ended up with an exposed king. |

Jun-19-14 | | IFNB: We've seen quite a few Viennas this week. I'm hopeful the opening sees a resurgence. It's a lot of fun, and there is still some good unexplored territory. |

Jun-19-14 | | SirRuthless: This kid is really something at the blitz table. One does not just win games vs Carlsen. To remove the sword form the stone is the feat of a future champion. |
|
Jun-19-14 | | IFNB: I didn't realize he was so young. |

Jun-19-14 | | Everett: Quite a fan of the 3.g3 line. Glek is a veteran who plays this stuff often. |

Jun-20-14 | | 1d410: Magnus walked his king into a really big mess here, but it's blitz and mistakes are expected. |

Jun-22-14 | | Catholic Bishop: the live commentary made the end of this game so much fun |

Unexplored? I doubt it, somehow. Half-forgotten territory, maybe.
This system with g3 was tried in the 19th century, and turned up again in the 1970s. |

Jul-14-14 | | Wavy: He is already 18 so not that young anymore. Rapport is also 18 and he is already a 2700 player. To put it in perspective, Anish Giri was born in 1994 while this guy was born in 1995. Anish is just 1 year older than this guy. Hence I don't think that this guy is the future of chess. |

Oct-10-14 | | krippp: Carlsen had the better position for the early game, playing with brilliant strokes such as <16..Bc4!?>.
But he should not have left his ..a7-pawn hanging like that, protected only by the wavering ..Nc6. Something simple like <18..a5>, before opening up the center or such, would've probably given him a routine victory. I guess Carlsen was impetuous, simply wanting to brush off his lower-rated opponent as quickly as possible. After <22..Ne5??>, again impetuous, he goes from advantaged to dead lost. Some simple defense like <22..Qf6 23.Rhf1 Kb8>, or even <22..Kb7!?>, would've probably maintained advantage, but <22..Na5!> is best (note how then <23.b4?! d3!> actually crushes). |

Note Carlsen's reaction when he loses the queen :) |
