Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-11-15  detritus: I wonder what on Earth Koneru was thinking with 29. … Bxh3? I guess 30. gxh3 does solve Black's problems, but 30. Rxd5 doesn't seem to be a particularly difficult move to find, especially considering White had no time pressure at all at that point.
Oct-11-15  dumbgai: I play the Open Defense with black but haven't faced the 9. Qe2 and 10. Rd1 plan, although it's considered a viable alternative to the 9. Nbd2 and 9. c3 main lines. Black seemed to be doing fine here in a typical Open Defense position where white has the better pawn structure but black has active pieces. 29...Bxh3 didn't work but black's real problem might be trading off so many pieces and leaving herself with a bad endgame.

She said at the press conference she missed the line 30. ♖xd5 ♔f8 31. ♘d4 (31. ♘d2 ♗e6 =) ♖b1+ 32. ♔h2 ♗e6 (or 32... ♗g4 33. f3 ♗h5 34. ♖d8+ ♔e7 35. ♘c6+ ♔e6 35. g4 with a mate attack) 33. ♖d8+ ♔e7 34. ♘c6#.

Quite a clean game by M. Muzychuk, Koneru blundered mainly because White had found a plan to keep a slightly better position which was rather unpleasant for Black to defend (23. ♘xc5 instead of the obvious 23. ♘bd4 was a good decision). It seems MM keeps improving and could finish this tournament ranked world #3...

I was watching the game live on chess24 when Koneru dropped Bxh3 on the board, and it looked a lot like someone panicking to avoid the squeeze. I guess if she did consider 30. Rxd5 and just missed the mating attack in one of the branches then maybe it's not a full-blown panic attack over the board, but it was clear she was feeling the pressure.

Really looking forward to the title match preview in Round 10.
