Jul-01-22  ILikeKeres: A full two points ahead of the field, Nepomniatchi opts for a well-known grandmaster draw. Nakamura getting 2nd or 3rd is still a fine result in this tournament, but I guess he doesn't want to become world champion.

Shame, as we were all hoping for a fighting game.

FSR: Nakamura explains his reasoning here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPD... In brief, he thought that if he played more sharply (e.g. some kind of Sicilian) his chances of losing would be a lot better than his chances of winning. Allowing a quick draw still keeps alive his chances of finishing second, which could mean a world championship match if Carlsen, as threatened, decides not to play.

In retrospect, after Ding's horrific loss as White against Radjabov, this looks to me like a brilliant decision by Nakamura.

Jul-04-22  Ulhumbrus: After 7...d6 instead of 7...Nbd4 Fine says that 8 e6! Bxe6 9 axb5 Ne5 10 Nd4 <is killing>

This suggests however playing the pawn sacrifice e6 after 7...Nbd4 at some point.

One alternative to 10 exd6 is 10 e6 starting an attack in return for the pawn sacrificed eg after 10...Bxe6 11 f4

PawnSac: I watched Hikaru's Titled Tuesday stream last night and he used this same line to draw his last round and win the match. It was a bit humorous
