eternaloptimist: <whiteshark> yes …Ne7 looks good then exchanging a & b pawns, exchanging Rs on the a-file & then Naka putting his remaining R on the b-file to attack Gukesh’s weak b-pawn looks good to me from Naka’s perspective

offramp: Nakamura has Japanese heritage and I have seen pics of those strange Japanese islanders people that are totally covered hair. Even £$%"" %%$£& ^%%%$/

eternaloptimist: Well Naka did 2 of the things that I mentioned but he played …Nb6 instead of …Ne7. Let’s c if he plays …Rb8 eventually & also gets his Q in on an attack on Gukesh’s weak b-pawn. Gukesh’s e-pawn is weak right now also. I don’t think Gukesh should play f4 now to guard it

eternaloptimist: …& now Naka is attacking the b-pawn. He has improved his position little by little & I like his position better than Gukesh’s position

eternaloptimist: Thx for the complement <offramp>!
Apr-10-24  BxChess: <eternaloptimist:> What do you see in Nakamura's position that's different to Gukesh's? I can sort of see that his king is safer but not much else.

perfidious: One potential long-term weakness is White's pawns being on squares the same colour as his bishop. Gukesh is looking to stay active and not drift into passivity.

eternaloptimist: <BxChess> well I’m not saying that Naka has a big advantage now (@ move 24) but I would rather b playing his position b/c Gukesh has 2 weak pawns & it looks like Gukesh is going to play f4 to guard his weak e-pawn. This means that his K’s castled position will b more open & weaker than before f4

eternaloptimist: <perfidious> exactly…that really affects the scope of his B
Apr-10-24  BxChess: <eternaloptimist, perfidious > Thanks. I see what you are saying.

If Gukesh moves his rook off the back rank, maybe Naka has got a mating net involving Rd1, Qf1, Qh1 and Bh6.

perfidious: <eternaloptimist>, after, inter alia, reading Pachman's <Modern Chess strategy> as a 1500 player, I had some understanding of such things, but the really striking comment I read came ca 1978, in which a top GM (possibly Korchnoi) discussed 'good' and 'bad' bishops. He noted that actually the term is a relative one, for the so-called bad piece can be useful in defence. On the other hand, it is less of a factor in attack. I never forgot that lesson.

Black could try 24...f5?
Then 25. exf6 Bh6
26. Qxe6+ Kh8
27. f7+ Bg7
28. Qf6 Bxf6
29. Bxf6#.

I said a while ago that ...Bg7 was no good. The kingside bishop wanted squares like e7, c5 and b6. Too late now.

Apr-10-24  whiteshark: To come back to the structure:
The isolated pawns on the queenside will dissolve - otherwise there will be no progress. Then you could also halve the board in terms of pawns. At the moment there's really nothing to see how things can continue...

eternaloptimist: <BxChess> u r welcome! I’m glad that clarified things for u <perfidious> I love that book! If u look at my profile at the words w/ green tint u will c that it’s listed as 1 of my favorite books! I learned a lot from that book; it’s definitely an oldie but goodie. That’s a good point about a bad B being a relative term; it depends on specifically what u r talking about in a position

Korora: If they don't concede to the cat, Gukesh may find himself in Zeitnot ere long.

Bishoprick: Looks like a draw. Anyone think differently?
Apr-10-24  BxChess: I agree that it will be a draw. I can't see how to progress.

eternaloptimist: I also agree that this game will b a draw now. Naka had Gukesh defending for a pretty good while but Gukesh figured out a way to simultaneously attack Naka’s c-pawn & defend his own b-pawn. Now both of those pawns r off of the board so it’ll b a draw for sure

eternaloptimist: …& indeed they agreed to a draw
Apr-10-24  whiteshark: As much as I appreciate de Bono's "<Lateral Thin♔>", I haven't heard of any of his chess expertise.
Apr-11-24  Atking: Agsin Gukesh got nothing from the opening and still keep a fighting balance.
