Apr-22-24  rwbean: Perhaps 33. ♕d3 and Black can't break through?

beatgiant: <rwbean> 33. Qd3 Re8 would let Black have the e-file, for then 34. Bxa4?! <Ra8> and White will have trouble covering all the weak spots, or 34. Rxb6? Qe1 breaks through.

If White plays a waiting game with 33. Qd3 Re8 34. Rf1 Qd7, Black can make slow maneuvers and it's hard for White to prevent an eventual ...b5 break while also watching the e-file.

Apr-22-24  paavoh: How do you guys evaluate this KID 4.g3 fianchetto variation? To me, it seems slightly passive and the White LSB does not often get targets. Other opinions?

perfidious: <paavoh>, in the 1990s, I used to play it with both colours and it has its points for White. One game I well remember is getting squashed by Michael Rohde in the money round at Saratoga 1992 on the black side of a Yugoslav. Abasov's handling of this well-trodden line strikes me as indeed being passive. Difficult to believe he was unfamiliar.
May-02-24  paavoh: Thanks, <perfidious>, for your insight.
