Benzol: Anyone outside of Australasia interested in the Melbourne Cup? Tune in this afternoon for the 2011 edition. In the meantime I'm off to the TAB.

:)

Oct-31-11  M.D. Wilson: Who's your tip, Benzol? Mine's Americain. Crisp day in Melbourne today, but the rain's held off; for now.

Benzol: <M D Wilson> Americain was my choice too but I was working and didn't get to see the race or find out who actually won.

:)

The annual meeting of the Melbourne Chess Club was held on Thursday at the club room, Nissen's cafe.

Sedgefield Wyatt Sedgefield occupied the chair.

The report of the committee of management showed that the club was in a very prosperous condition.

The committee referred to the friendly match played by telegram between seven members of the Melbourne club and seven members of the Adelaide Chess Club, in which the Melbourne club scored five games, drew one, and lost one.

During the last year twenty-eight new members had been admitted into the club.

His Excellency Sir J. H. T. Manners Sutton had also become an honorary member.

The committee reported that the tournament now in progress showed considerable improvement in the play of many of the members.

The committee also referred to the unfair manner in which, it was alleged, the proceedings of the club had been reported in this journal.

The balance-sheet and report were adopted.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:-

President, Andrew Burns

vice-president, P Phillips

Mr. Cross was re-elected treasurer; and Louis Ellis secretary.

The following gentlemen were elected a committee of management:-

Messrs. William R Stephen

Lewis Samuel Phillips

Louis Goldsmith

Sedgefield Wyatt Sedgefield

Hammond, and H Heap

A vote of thanks to the retiring officers and the chairman closed the meeting.>
