White to play and mate in 83(?)

Though it appears as though it can be done in 70 moves.

White forces Black to use up all the pawn moves, Black tries not to.

White plays 1.Qb7 Ka4 2.Qb2 then locks the BK on a8

forcing a pawn move, then releases the BK with Qb4 Ka7, Qb5 Ka8, Qb6 to force another pawn move.

Eventually...you use up the Black pawn moves and get to here (White to play)

You then force the BK to h3 and mate with the Queen on h5.

Which is easier said than done but it is possible.

Maybe one of you guys with the super-duper computers can switch it on from here. (WHite to play)

ANd see how long it takes.

Hi vonKrolock,

The problem appeared in 'Vielzugige Schauchaufgaben' (Budapest 1889) but no source.

I saw Halumbirek's name linked to it in a loose BCM (December 1963) where his name was left out of a composition. They credit this one to O.T.Blathy but Halumbirek was also looking for the source.

Feb-05-20  vonKrolock: Now I can see... The #83 is by Gustavus Charles Reichhelm, and appeared first (probably) in a Philadelphia periodical ("The Chess Digest" ?!), under the motto 'The Captive King', during the 1870s. A solution in 77 moves is known since some time now, and more recent researches suggests that an even shorter demolition can be possible...

Hello Again,

Excellent, now I can add a genuine name to this wonderful idea. I have a mate in 70 from here:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/en...

Which I'll be dropping onto my bloggy thingy later on today.

Thanks again for getting me the name.
