Grandmaster. He was Spanish Champion in 1980 and 1992.
In 1980 and 1992 Gómez won his two Spanish Chess Championship titles , beating international masters Francisco Javier Sanz Alonso and Francisco Javier Ochoa de Echagüen respectively, finishing runner-up on one occasion in 1983 behind international master José García Padrón . He also won the 2002 Open Spanish Championship , the year in which the Closed Spanish Championship was won by Alexei Shirov .
He has participated representing Spain in four Chess Olympiads : 1980 in Valletta , 1984 in Thessaloniki , 1992 in Manila and 2000 in Istanbul , 3 and in two European Team Chess Championships in 1989 in Haifa and 1992 in Debrecen . 4
In June 2007 Mario was ranked 4th in the León International Open.
Mario Gómez participated with the Sestao Chess Club team, in the 2007 Spanish Team Chess Championship , held in Seville .
He has won the Euskadi Absolute Championship on 9 occasions: 1988, 1990, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009
