Henri Delaire was a chess player, study composer, and organizer, and the first president of the French Chess Federation. He was the author of the manuals Premières notions d'échecs (1911), Les échecs modernes: histoire, théorie complète (1914), and Traité-manuel des échecs (3rd ed. 1930). He also edited the magazine La Stratégie, sometimes sustaining it with his own funds, from 1908 until its end in 1940.
