JOSEF HRDINA
(born Mar-17-1882, died Dec-1914, 32 years old) Austria

[what is this?]

Josef Hrdina was born 1882 in Tata, Bohemia (then Austria-Hungary). He was an engineer for the Austrian state railroad. First, he played in tournaments of the Graz Chess Society and thereby became strong enough to be awarded the title of Master by the Bavarian Chess Federation.(1)

In 1911 he lost a match to Hans Fahrni by the score of +1 -2 =4 (one game was not finished).(2) In 1912, he participated in the Breslau Hauptturnier A, sharing 4th to 6th place.(3) He also won the Innsbruck Chess Club Championship with 14.5/15 in autumn 1912.(4) Hrdina participated in the 5th Trebitsch Memorial (1913) and was one of the favourites in the Mannheim (1914) Hauptturnier A until he had to leave for military duty after round 6.(1)

His wife Petronella reported his death on the Polish front in December 1914, but the Russian Red Cross later corrected that statement, reporting that Josef Hrdina had been severly wounded and taken captive as a prisoner of war by the Russians.(5) Hrdina never returned from World War I.

Jul-21-12  Karpova: Josef Hrdina was severly wounded on the polish battlefield in December 1914 and became a prisoner of war in Russia. This information was sent from Josef's wife Petronella to the '(Neue) Wiener Schachzeitung' 1915 (page 106).
Jan-10-14  whiteshark: † Dec. 1914 (missing in action and presumed dead)

Here's a chessbase report about him (by Dr. Franz Hager): http://de.chessbase.com/post/vermisst

Jan-10-14  Karpova: <whiteshark>

See my post above, the May-June 1915 'Wiener Schachzeitung' reported on page 106, that Hrdina was still alive in December 1914.

Dr. Franz Hager knows that but his wording is a bit misleading:

<Im Dezember 1914 ist der 32-jährige Josef Hrdina dann am russischen Kriegsschauplatz in Galizien schwer verwundet worden, in Gefangenschaft geraten und danach verschollen. Nach Mitteilungen seiner Gattin und des Roten Kreuzes.>.

Apparently, Hrdina's wife Petronella reported Josef's death in December 1914. It was the Red Cross which reported that Hrdina had still been alive back then, was wounded and became a POW in Russia.

I agree that he seemingly didn't survive the war, but it appears strange to record his death as December 1914, considering the information we have.

Jan-11-14  Karpova: Innsbruck Chess Club tournament which concluded not long ago (see date of source), single round robin, 15 rounds:

1. J Hrdina 14.5
2. Dr. W Mitter 13.0
3. Dr. M Kapferer 12.0
4. W Flir 11.5
5. von Burlo 10.5
6. R Winter 9.0

Hrdina became Club Champion and was awarded the certificate of honour.
