Apr-04-24 | | Nosnibor: I believe that the game against J Tarrant was played at the Clearing House on April 5th 1878 where he scored 6 wins a draw and a loss in a simul. |
|
Apr-04-24
 | | jnpope: I'll double check but I have that Tarrant game coming from the <Field> of March 30. But I do believe Tarrant participated at the Clearing House exhibition in April. |
|
Apr-04-24 | | Nosnibor: The Field stated on March 30 that the simultaneous exhibition would be held on April 5 in order to give notice to interested parties. |
|
Apr-04-24
 | | jnpope: I just double checked and the Tarrant game was played March 16, 1878:
Blackburne Blindfold Simul 8b, London (1878)Which gives us six of the eight games played on that occasion. The Railway Clearing-House exhibition participants/results were (from the <Field>, 1878.04.20, p475):
1 Kindell Jr. (Drew)
2 Blackburne vs Eades, 1878 (Eales?)
3 Tuckfield (Lost)
4 Hoare (Lost)
5 Underdown (Lost)
6 Blackburne vs W Knight, 1878
7 Tarrant (Lost)
8 Hill (Won)
So Tarrant participated in both. |

 | | MissScarlett: With new uploads, it's best to check for ragged pgns: https://www.chessgames.com/nodejs/g... |
|
Apr-04-24
 | | jnpope: Is there a problem? Pgn4web has no issue with "ragged" pgn data and as far as I know it's not an issue in the PGN spec. |
|
Apr-04-24
 | | MissScarlett: It looks a mess! Fix it. |
|
Apr-04-24
 | | jnpope: I'm half-tempted to add a line-break after every move pair... but I won't. As long as the PGN doesn't break the viewer or hinder some other piece of functionality, such as import/export into CB or SCID, I'm not investing one second of my time into fixing something that should be fixed programmatically in the CG upload/import code. |

A game from the Westminster Gazette, September 1901, which states that it's from the 'recent International Amateur tournament at Haarlem,' So presumably this event - http://www.edochess.ca/tournaments/... - except that according to the crosstable - https://web.archive.org/web/2018012... - Leussen won his game with Olland: Olland vs B Leussen, 1901 As Olland won the event outright, there wouldn't seem to be the need for any play-off games. These two apparently played a match earlier in 1901 - of which <CG> has two games. Could it be from that? |
|
Apr-05-24
 | | Stonehenge: I have found some more games of that match. I'll have a look. |
|
Apr-05-24
 | | MissScarlett: I see that match was played in Utrecht. |
|
Apr-05-24
 | | Stonehenge: <I see that match was played in Utrecht.> Yes: Olland-Leussen Match (1900/01) I can't find that Haarlem game. |
|
Apr-05-24 | | Chessist: That match began in Utrecht in November 1900.
TNS 1901, p149: Olland 9, Leussen 4 = 2 > 10:5. |

 | | MissScarlett: I trust I haven't upset User: jnpope. There are still 470 Blackburne games to go. |
|
Apr-05-24
 | | jnpope: Still here and still sifting through my database for more Blackburne games. |
|
Apr-05-24
 | | jnpope: Anyone up on their Irish?
Blackburne vs A T Bassett, 1894 (CG is unsure)
Blackburne vs James Young, 1894 (CG has James)
Blackburne vs M Woollett, 1894 (CG is unsure)
Blackburne vs E A Robinson, 1894
Blackburne vs E A Robinson, 1894
Blackburne vs R A Williams, 1894
Blackburne vs Gracie Shaw, 1894
Blackburne vs Mrs J T Mrs Barrett, 1894 (CG ingested oddly)

Apr-05-24
 | | MissScarlett: <(CG ingested oddly)> This is what I meant by raggedness, not frayed edges. You're doing something wrong, because my <{notes}> are never frazzled. |
|
Apr-06-24
 | | jnpope: Notes? I didn't notice anything wrong with the notes. I think SCID line breaks them when it creates a PGN. The name ingestion gets wonky here due to the way CG converts things from "last name, first name" to "first name last name" especially if a title is involved in there. |
|
Apr-06-24 | | Nosnibor: You are doing a great jnpope on the Blackburne games mission! |
|
Apr-06-24
 | | Stonehenge: Feel free to improve:
FJ Lee & Co vs Blackburne & Co, 1905. |
|
Apr-06-24
 | | MissScarlett: What's wrong with Joseph Henry Blackburne / Allies? |
|
Apr-06-24
 | | Stonehenge: Not sure about ally or allies.
Not sure about the year here:
<played at the yearly chess festival at Hastings> Blackburne / J A Watt vs Gunsberg / Dobell, 1906. |
|
Apr-06-24
 | | Stonehenge: And a last one:
Atkins / Gunsberg vs Blackburne / T F Lawrence, 1908. |
|
Apr-07-24
 | | MissScarlett: Hoffer gives <W Winkler> in Schlechter vs Winkler, 1901. The same as Pillsbury vs Winkler, 1902? |
