kwgurge: CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL. It was a great experience.
Jan-11-07  Eyal: The fact that Arno resigned at this stage is a real compliment to the world team - it means he had no doubt whatsoever we would play the resulting rook ending accurately.
Jan-11-07  suenteus po 147: We did it! Is this The World's first victory?
Jan-11-07  izimbra: Congratulations everyone for a job well done! One key for the world was obviously not making any mistakes, while our opponent made a few. Let's not get too cocky for the next game.
Jan-11-07  Nightranger: < mig55 > OK. I'll have 3. 8-)
Jan-11-07  isemeria: <The World played with an impeccable positional style. In my opinion, the keys were:

18.d2!
19.b6!
28.h3!
29.h2!>

Also, in my opinion, we realized our advantage with the most effective way with 36. b4 and 41. Qb7+. (Easy to say now, of course)

Jan-11-07  calidoggg: Bring on Yuri Shulman
Jan-11-07  Eyal: <ughaibu: Where's Hydra?> Even more important: where are sharpnova and steppenwolf?
Jan-11-07  Nibiru: Congratulations everyone!
Jan-11-07  themadhair: The winning line that had been prepared with the help of several members of the world team is still online in my forum if any are interested.

My friends - it has been an honour, an education and a privilage to have played chess with the past weeks.

Jan-11-07  Confuse: Congratulations guys. Fantastic analysis by some of the longer members here. Does this mean we can take on Hydra? ; )
Jan-11-07  avidfan: Thanks to <Random Visitor, twinlark, Thorsson, Domdaniel, Honza Cervenka, Rookfile, Karpova et al.> for their tireless work in achieving this victory.
Jan-11-07  dalbertz: Thanks to all those who put in so much time and hard work. Congrats!
Jan-11-07  GeauxCool: ĆÕÑĜŖĄŦŪĻÄŤĬ- ;ŌŃŠ ŢÒ ĀĽŁ!!
Jan-11-07  Canuck16: CONGRATS World Team.

My attempt to squeeze a little more knowledge out of this game:

Is he resigning because ?

41. ... Qxb7
42. axb7 Re8 (only way to stop queening)
43. Rb3 Rb8 (only way to prevent loss of rook after 44. Rxb5 anything 45. b8=Q).

44. Rxb5

And at this point his R is pinned to the defense of the pawn promotion and the kings can both get into the action equally, so it is just a matter of time until either our king gets over to help the pawn promote or else the rooks trade off and the pawn queens.

Does this seem reasonable, or am I missing some move black has to stay active ?

Domdaniel: Wow. No more plotting. Arno did the decent thing. You are a gentleman, Herr Nickel. Danke Schon.

Well, everyone, it's been fun. I'll miss you guys, gals, humans, engines, and trolls.

Jan-11-07  twinlark: Congratulations, my friends, for a job well done. We've made chess history this day.

Domdaniel: btw, I'd been keeping this secret in case I was tempted to abuse it, but I have a email address for Arno.

Does anyone think I should use it to say thanks?

Jan-11-07  jepflast: Amazing!!!

Congratulations, World!

WannaBe: People, go to Arno Nickel page and shake hands with our opponent. =)
Jan-11-07  gmgomes: I really would like to read Mr. Nickell´s comments about this game. Where did he fail.
Jan-11-07  dakgootje: Congratulations everyone! ;-)

Well done all =)

Jan-11-07  isemeria: <Canuck16> It's not quite as simple as you describe. There are several ways for Black to try to defend, but they all fail. Check the discussion at User: themadhair starting from Dec-21-06. There's a lot of stuff on this ending.
Jan-11-07  SOUTHERN HEN: Thanks Arno for being a true professional. If you had been playing me alone, I would have been completely overmatched.
