Apr-08-12  notyetagm: First!
Apr-08-12  Layson: Last! (at the time of this entry)
Apr-08-12  kellmano: Good to see you back <Layson> my fellow Morozevich fan.

And you are no longer last.

Apr-08-12  cro777: The Russian Team Chess Championship 2012 takes place in the village of Loo (a historic district of Sochi), Russia.

18 teams will compete in the men's tournament (7 rounds, Swiss system). Interestingly, WGM Natalia Pogonina will play in the men's tournament (for the Chess Club Rakita, Belgorod County).

The rating favorite (ELO average 2708)is the reining champion SHSM-64, Moscow. The players on the board will be: 1.Caruana 2.Wang Hao 3.Leko 4.Giri 5.Riazantsev 6.Grachev 7.Potkin 8.Najer (Leko is replacing Gelfand).

Morozevich will play for Ekonomist (ELO average 2705), Karjakin for Tomsk-400 (2695), Svidler for SPB (2690) and Shirov for Ugra (2653).

The first round of the tournament is April 9th at 15:00 local time.

Zero tolerance rule and no early draws (before move 40) strike again!

Apr-08-12  messachess: "...no early draws (before move 40)" So if it's only kings on the board by move 30, they what; move around for 10 more moves?

tamar: The rules are hazy. I saw at least one game under 40 moves in the last round of the European Individual Championships drawn by perpetual check.
Apr-08-12  waustad: It usually means that they need to talk to an arbiter instead of talking to the other player, even if it is a repeated position 3 times. At least that is what they did in Plovdiv. I'd like to offer the caveat that I haven't read these rules for this tournament yet.
Apr-08-12  cro777: <messachess: So if it's only kings on the board by move 30, they what; move around for 10 more moves?>

Communication between players (offer of draw) is forbidden until the 40th move has been played. The players should formally ask the referee permission to abandon their game.

Apr-08-12  cro777: GM Emil Sutovsky, the President of the Association of Chess Professionals (ACP):

"Registering losses for early draws (before 40th move) led to the fact that in the last round of the European Individual Championship in Plovdiv one third of the games from the top of the table finished before they actually started. They simply set and made another 40 moves".

Apr-08-12  Blunderdome: I'm sure if there's insufficient material the players will have no difficulty convincing the arbiters to allow a draw.

Seems these anti-draw rules are getting awfully Draconian, though. If it's a threefold repetition a player has the right to <claim> a draw -- there shouldn't be any need to sweet-talk the arbiter, or keep repeating until move 40 as we saw in one Plovdiv game. I guess the arbiter might need to come over to verify a threefold claim, but that should be all.

Apr-08-12  cro777: Zero –tolerance rule will be applied for each round.

Apr-08-12  theagenbiteofinwit: Wow, it took about 20 years, but apparently Danailov has finally developed a sense of public perception.
Apr-09-12  Naniwazu: I hope Ekonomist wins this tournament.

Natalia Pogonina: The line-up is very nice, with half the top-rated world's chess players participating. The only obvious drawback is just 7 rounds - gimme more! ;-)

HeMateMe: I was in a college beer bar one night, and this girl claimed a "three-fold repetition"--she had told me to get lost three times, and I wouldn't disappear. I felt there were still winning chances. It's the competitor in me.

I guess I was breaking the rules, but there was no arbiter to end the competition.

Finally, around 1:30 am, after we had polished off many more cheap beers, her friend approached and did a Campomanes. She said "Both participants have reached a point where they no longer are able to continue the struggle". And, she picked up her girlfriend and dragged her home.

I was there next weekend, for the rematch.

I hope Jakovenko keep the good form and Wang Hao could perform well.
Apr-09-12  Strongest Force: Here's a silly question: does Fab ever get tired of playing?
Apr-09-12  Arcturar: Moro blundered really badly against Popov, losing over 7 rating points... Now he is out of the top 10, but hopefully only for a brief while.
