May-23-11  parmetd: agree Helloween.

I usually just listen to ChessFM as I don't understand Russian. When someone translates Shipov... it is indeed a treat to have him. However, no one translates Khalifman or Rublevsky. Chessbomb has had some commentators like Naiditsch/Feller. Chessgames has had Short/Pogonina. But Chess.FM has consistently had the best commentators over the years: Seirawan, Christiansen, Ronen, Svidler, Van Wely, Rowson, Kaidanov, Yermolinsky, Lenderman, Kamsky, Benjamin, Gustafsson, Smeets, Defirmian, Fedorowicz, Speelman, Mig and i'm sure others.

It was nice for the first us champs that St. Louis had Emil Sutovsky. Donaldson has been great during this match. However, they consistently match them with the worst commentator in chess: Shahade.

Check It Out: I like IM Donaldson's style of commentary. He is smooth and even but not too dry, and stays away from the engines. He explores various ideas while the game is in progress and his speaking style flows well.

I've only read GM Shipov's commentary thanks to <polarmis/mishanp>'s awesome website,http://www.chessintranslation.com/, but his technical prowess along with his comedy is terrific.

May-24-11  Imposter: <I don't know how Mo Ashley kept his cool> 'cos mo is cool is how he kept his cool
May-24-11  jahhaj: Jen Shahade is the best American commentator, it doesn't matter for most of us that she isn't the strongest player. Of the others I've heard, Donaldon is too dry, Seirawan is too boring, Ashley is too much into self-promotion. But I liked Ben Finegold when he did the US championship, he and Jen seemed to have some chemistry.
May-24-11  parmetd: Seirawan boring? Shahade the best commentator? Are you joking or just from St. Louis Chess Club?
May-24-11  frogbert: <the other site starting earlier this month and probably started up in response to your prolonged absence from yours. not criticising, just saying.>

imposter, obviously. note that there are now <two> other sites, and i link to both of them from my site. there are no similar links in the other direction. :o)

May-24-11  Imposter: <frogbert> I did notice that. you're a good man and you've done good things for chess. kudos to you but not to the ingrates that don't acknowledge you and your great hearted contribution to chess and its fans.
May-24-11  Blunderdome: <frogbert> Isn't it a bit awkward that those other sites ripped off every one of the conventions you used, didn't credit you for anything, then stuck a copyright at the bottom of their page? Nice of you to link to them anyway.

It's cool that someone's doing the women's live ratings, though.

May-24-11  jahhaj: <parmetd> Ummm, neither.
May-24-11  theagenbiteofinwit: Carlsen wouldn't tolerate Nakamura calculating himself a win out of a losing position.

keypusher: This was a terrific match. I'm glad they played it!
May-24-11  boz: Great match. Donaldson is an excellent commentator. Just the right tone for my ears. Naka proves once again that I should never underestimate him. Game 6 was a nice positional win, yet sharp and dynamic. Nakamura never runs out of ideas and sees very deeply.
May-24-11  Agent Bouncy: Jennifer Shahade is not annoying to me. All you complainers are like someone who opens a bottle of champagne and waits a few days for the carbonation to fizz away before drinking it.
May-24-11  Jim Bartle: I like Shahade as a commentator, at least with Ashley. But she does have a habit of stepping on the co-hosts comments.

The greatest flaw in live commentary is that they talk through variations far too quickly, not giving listeners the chance to keep up.

chancho: Naka is getting better and better as a world class player. I'm glad for him.
Hope he keeps it up!
May-24-11  parmetd: I am literally shocked at the support Shahade has. I have never seen a worse commentator in my life. It leads me to believe either you've never seen a good commentator for comparison or that there is actually a radical difference in what people want out of a commentator.
May-24-11  ajile: Naka has served notice that he too can do a slow positional crush as evidenced in the last win. I like this style and also why I like Kamsky.
May-24-11  bartonlaos: there is actually a radical difference in what people want out of a commentator.
May-24-11  gropek: I like Shahade's commentary...

I admit that at first I got a bit "annoyed" by her way of talking, but I got used to it pretty quickly, and now she is a fine commentator to me :)

Donaldson is also pretty good, he explains the ideas really well

May-24-11  gropek: But that's just me tho... I normally get used to things instead complaining about it (im not criticizing anyone btw...)
May-24-11  Agent Bouncy: I'd guess, parmetd, that you don't like Fran Drescher either.

May-24-11  parmetd: What does Fran Drescher have to do with anything?
May-24-11  bartonlaos: What's that symbol above octopi? I don't get it.
May-24-11  rilkefan: Octo...pi. Like octopus, eight feet - pi with eight feet.
