"Ladies and gentlemen, the games are about to begin! MC3 starts on October 6 at Harrah's Resort Atlantic City. Some of you have been preparing for the tournament, the richest Open in the world, for months. Soon the rubber will hit the road. Players from all over the world, including over two dozen GMs, will throw their hats into the ring to do battle." After seven rounds, Jones, Swiercz, Cordova and Jianchao Zhou advanced (Jones directly and the latter three via the Millionaire Chess (Blitz Tiebreaks) (2016)) to the Millionaire Chess (Knock-Out Rapid) (2016). The "Millionaire Monday" event final between Jones and Swiercz occurred on October 10th, and was won (2-0) by Swiercz. Four players from each of two lower rating groups (2400-2549 and U2400) also proceeded to knock-out rapid matches. The remaining players finished the 9-round Swiss. The Millionaire Chess Open is different from any other open chess tournament in history. The first seven rounds of every section will be a qualifying stage to determine who plays for the big prizes on Millionaire Monday. Four finalists from each section will move on to play two knock-out rounds to determine who wins the top prize. The last two rounds of the Open section will also be played on Millionaire Monday to determine who wins 5th place and under, as well as to give players a chance to acquire norms. In the other sections, the tournament will be officially over by Sunday night, October 9 for players who did not make it to Millionaire Monday. read more;

I understand full well that high entry fees from amateurs are used to provide incentives to attract GMs. But man, those cash prizes in the lower sections just bring out all the sandbaggers and possibly other cheaters. |

Early entry fee, $880, room at Harrah's $123 per night, seven nights (if you qualify for Millionaire Monday), that's almost $1,740 (then you throw in some food money, in there too). You got plane fare, or if you take the Greyhound bus to the tournament. But I doubt GMs from West Coast would take a bus to New Jersey. So I can sandbag and go home with $1300 prize money (which is no guarantee that I could/would have won). Sounds like a really smart move. And who forced all the lower section players to enter? |

Please update.> At CG, tournament tables reflect only the games in the database, not the results of tiebreaks. Notice that 2 of Barbosa's games haven't been added yet. This tourney has some of the ditziest tiebreak rules ever seen. You would think someone who was clear first after all the classical rounds, like Jones here, would be declared the winner. But no. The "winner" is determined by a rapid mini-tourney of apparently everybody down to 5 points. Ridiculous in my opinion. No wonder the top pros stayed away this year. |

Boomie, you have to understand that all of the GMs entering the tournament were aware of the need to win the millionaire Monday playoff (and not just place first in the regular rounds) in order win the top prize. It may not be your cup of tea but it's certainly not the "ditziest" as you claim. Everyone was aware of the rules when they entered this tournament. And all those that objected, didn't play. BTW, the reason top pros didn't play it this year is b/c it overlapped with the Tal Memorial AND the Isle of Man tournaments. Maurice timed it badly this year, in my opinion. |

No guaranteed prize money + potential to lose a ton of rating points if they have a couple of bad games. |
