 | | Sally Simpson: Round 7 Grieve - Dong shaping up to be interesting. Black has placed a Knight sac and Queen sac on the table. click for larger viewHarry won't fall for it and is currently thinking of a response. |

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. O-O Nxe4 5. d4 a6 6. Ba4 b5 7. Bb3 d5 8. dxe5 Be6 9. c3 Bc5 10. Nbd2 O-O 11. Bc2 Nxf2 12. Rxf2 f6 13. Nf1 Bxf2+ 14. Kxf2 fxe5 15. Kg1 e4 16. Nd4 Qf6 17.Be3. |

 | | Sally Simpson: Dong played 17...Ne5
click for larger viewThink of this as a live transmission and I'm bored doing it already. It is a Bishop and Knight v a Rook and two pawn game. Grieve is currently 15 minutes behind on the clock. Speaking of Dong, what is Ding doing these days...and when these two meet it will be pun wars. (I think they have met before, the names ring a bell etc...) |

 | | perfidious: The Dilworth in OTB was always a good time--not that I could often get there, as spoilsport opponents would often use the move order 9.Be3 Be7 10.c3 to circumvent my evil intentions. |
Jul-28-23
 | | Sally Simpson: Harry blundered but had a perpetual which he knocked back, now it appears in a KRPP v KQP ending (Harry has The Rook) he can set up a fortress. |
Jul-28-23
 | | MissScarlett: Midhun P Unnikrishnan had the bye in round 7. |

 | | HeMateMe: < Hi HeMateMe: I refer to your nonsense reference the car park where King Richard`s body was discovered. > Ok, but never put purposeful inactivity past organized British labour unions. Never. |
Jul-29-23 | | Nosnibor: You have obviously never been to Leicester where King Richard`s body was discovered. The actual car park is no more and therefore does not require cleaning. What stands in it`s place is a new building exhibiting the time from King Richard 111 to present times. British labour unions does hold with your premise. |
Jul-29-23
 | | HeMateMe: I just thought that if the corpse was not found until people were back at work then the unions would be in a better bargaining positioning. If They had found Dickie during the Garbage strike of 1976, well, think of how much pain and suffering could have been avoided? |

 | | kingscrusher: Thomas Villiers of Muswell Hill chess club is doing really well with 4.5/7 - his style is very interesting and dynamic. Congrats to Thomas :) |

 | | MissScarlett: Toby Cox has had a rough time: 0/7, but as he had the bye in round 3, I assume he has a half-point on the official scoreboard. |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: Yichen Han ½-½ Harry Grieve in just 10 moves! Rather an ignominious way for the outgoing champion to finish his reign. |
Jul-30-23
 | | perfidious: Yichen is not even aged sixteen; did this event wear him out? |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: Steven A Jones is not a player I'm familiar with despite his being, it seems, a regular at the British Championship. After losing to Mickey Adams in the first round it appears he's had the tournament of his life and comes into the last round at 4=. He's currently well on top of 2nd placed Daniel Howard Fernandez and if he wins he'll guarantee himself at least a share of 2nd place. |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: click for larger viewJones missed the absolutely crushing 20...Nxc4 (strangely one of the easier moves to see in his attack) and now holds just a modest advantage. |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: ... but it was good enough for the point anyway. |
Jul-30-23
 | | offramp: Jones S beat Fernandez totally. |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: Mickey Adams, needing only a draw for the title, shunned repetition and is still playing for the win. Having erred twice when golden opportunities presented themselves, he needs Willow to go wrong again if he's to get it. |
Jul-30-23
 | | perfidious: Ceding too many draws to lower-rated players would derail Adams' quest for 2900. |
Jul-30-23
 | | Sally Simpson: This is Mickey's 8th British championship win (his first was 1989) He is close to equalising Jonathan Penrose's 10 championship wins. And Mickey, as if on cue, is giving a simultaneous display to open a Jonathan Penrose Park (chess tables open to the public)

Jul-30-23
 | | offramp: A 94 move win for Adams v Jonah Willow. A tedious game, though. |
Jul-30-23
 | | Sally Simpson: Hi Offramp,
I watched the last part and was surprised Adams missed the win here. click for larger viewEasy sitting on the armchair but even I with my check all checks first motto saw it. It never happened. Mickey had plenty of time and I began to doubt the score was correct. Same game later on. I've seen players and games where moves like Kh4 were played here. click for larger viewMickey avoided it. He was one move away from jumping into the English Channel. |
Jul-30-23
 | | MissScarlett: < Midhun P Unnikrishnan had the bye in round 7.> And in rounds 8 & 9, it appears. Round 9 had other absences/withdrawals - Pigott, Khandelwal and Kueh were missing. I suppose the game Max Pert vs P Shaw, 2023 happened just to give Shaw a game, and doesn't count. |
Jul-30-23 | | goodevans: Toby Cox with +0-8=0 (not counting the bye) and Daniel Howard Fernandez with +6-3=0 share the honour of having had only decisive games. Quite different tournaments for the two though. |
