FSR: Tragically, the palindromically-named Nicolas Axel Mellem and Andreas Otto did not meet in this event.

perfidious: <FSR>, that is an unfortunate omission, to put it mildly.

On another front, why is the winner's surname always spelt 'Yemelin' in American English, same as 'Yekaterinburg', while 'Epishin' always drops the 'Y'?

FSR: <perfidious> One of life's mysteries.

I see that Jacob Aagaard and Henning Ogaard also didn't play. What's wrong with this tournament director?

<Chess Festival at the Wichern School <>>

16.10.1999

<We are one big community> is the guiding principle of the World Chess Federation FIDE. In Hamburg, it will be a family reunion again until next Friday. 385 chess players from 22 countries will take part in the <5th Wichern Open>. The venue of the tournament, which is endowed with about 20,000 Marks, is the multi-purpose hall of the Wichern School, Horner Weg 164. The games start at 2 p.m. every day.

30 grandmasters, headed by the Ukrainian <Igor Novikov>, are competing for the prize money of 4000 Marks. Among the favourites are also <Lubomir Ftacnik> and <Robert Kempinski>, two Bundesliga players of the Hamburger SK.

The attraction of this year's event is the match between the Hungarian <Peter Leko> (20), number nine in the world rankings, and the greatest German talent <Dimitrij Bunzmann> (17) from Berlin, a native of Kazakhstan. The match starts this Saturday.

<30 Grandmasters are taking their turn at the Wichern-Open> published on 14.10.1999

Around 370 participants from 20 countries are expected at the 5th Hamburg Wichern Open. At the eight-day chess event starting on Friday, 30 grandmasters will be at the starting line. Among them are Igor Novikov (Ukraine), Giorgi Giorgadze, Zurab Sturua (both Georgia), Nick Defirmian (USA), Ion Rogers (Australia), Sapar Batyrow (Turkmenistan) and Vlastimil Jansa (Czech Republic), who won the 1st edition. The Wichern-Open (Wichern-Schule, Horner Weg 164) will offer a prize money of 20,000 Marks, the winner will receive 4000 Marks.

As part of the event, a six-game duel between the ninth-ranked player in the world Peter Leko (Hungary) and the young German Dimitrij Bunzmann (Berlin) will be played from Saturday (2 p.m.). Leko is 20 years young, the Kazakh-born Bunzmann, who has lived in Germany for nine years, is even three years younger. The comparison will count towards the world ranking. The tournament starts on Friday at 10 a.m. and continues on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. onwards.
