Yes, my dear friend, yes, you, who uses as avatar his idol's face --- you just prooved my point. And the avatar also...simple people like to look, sound, behave etc like their idols. And usually the idols are contemporary characters. No one behaves as Bethoven for example. Read a little bit more, my friend; study old masters and then we can have a conversation.

Surely climbing the rankings to a quite clear #1 during the year should make one a fairly good candidate to Player of the Year? (And I haven't checked but I assume this means the overall rating performance by Topalov this year is higher than any other top player)Regarding Kramnik's match history: After beating Kasparov, he has drawn once and lost once vs a computer. He has drawn vs Leko and drawn (and won in "overtime") vs Topalov who more or less self-destructed. Including the match vs Anand, Kramnik has not outright won any of his last five matches. Does winning one match back in 2000 (vs Kasparov) make him a great match player 2008? Let's face it: no player has during the whole year been head and shoulders above the rest. |

And before the Kramnik fanboys jump me I must say forfiting that game over a bathroom was childish, he should have just played on (even if the topa team was acting ridiculous) and crushed topalov with his +2 advantage in the match score. Do you really think a Nadal or Federer would forfit wimbeldon just because one line call was unjustly called out, even on set point? Not in a million years and that maturity is what seperates real great athletes from chess players. |

The closest we can come up with will be the "greatest player of his generation" accolade. Capablanca was the best of his era, Fischer the best of his, and Kasparov the best of his time. |

The most promising younger players are Armenians, Azeri, Norwegian, Philipino...Artificially pumped Soviet school is in ruins. The last time when a Russian "won" the title it was the Elista sham. Vishy showed the world that the so called "champion" was just a pupped of ilumizhanov and the post-Communist mafia.
I don't see any Russians among the first 10 in the next decade.
