Dec-22-08  bgkuzzy: <walker> Check out chessmetrics.com. It is a very good unbiased source which measures player's performance over time.
Dec-22-08  walker: <You ask most people who the greatest basketball player of all time is, in 95 cases out of 100 you'll get Michael Jordan. The best golfer, they will tell you Tiger Woods.> Yes, my dear friend, yes, you, who uses as avatar his idol's face --- you just prooved my point. And the avatar also...simple people like to look, sound, behave etc like their idols. And usually the idols are contemporary characters. No one behaves as Bethoven for example. Read a little bit more, my friend; study old masters and then we can have a conversation. Merry Christmas!
Dec-22-08  walker: <shintaro go> BTW...I hope Wesley will be the next great player.
Dec-22-08  walker: < bgkuzzy > Yes.
Dec-22-08  walker: <didiablito> Casablanka, Topalov...who else?
Dec-22-08  HSOL: SetNoEscapeOn:
Surely climbing the rankings to a quite clear #1 during the year should make one a fairly good candidate to Player of the Year? (And I haven't checked but I assume this means the overall rating performance by Topalov this year is higher than any other top player)

Regarding Kramnik's match history: After beating Kasparov, he has drawn once and lost once vs a computer. He has drawn vs Leko and drawn (and won in "overtime") vs Topalov who more or less self-destructed. Including the match vs Anand, Kramnik has not outright won any of his last five matches.

Does winning one match back in 2000 (vs Kasparov) make him a great match player 2008?

Let's face it: no player has during the whole year been head and shoulders above the rest.

Dec-22-08  mugenjin205: If memory serves me correct kramnik drew topalov and won in rapids. He didn't actually beat him in classical games. And before the Kramnik fanboys jump me I must say forfiting that game over a bathroom was childish, he should have just played on (even if the topa team was acting ridiculous) and crushed topalov with his +2 advantage in the match score. Do you really think a Nadal or Federer would forfit wimbeldon just because one line call was unjustly called out, even on set point? Not in a million years and that maturity is what seperates real great athletes from chess players.
Dec-22-08  shintaro go: Topalov can win all the tournaments in the world from this point on but he will NEVER be considered the greatest chess player EVER.
Dec-22-08  badest: <shintaro go:> Maybe if he breaks GK's 2851 the discussion will start again :)
Dec-22-08  chessmoron: <Bulgarians and Topalov supporters> If Topalov wins against Kamsky and Anand...then we'll talk about his greatness. Other than that...Topalov cannot be compare to the great champions.
Dec-22-08  shintaro go: I will modify my argument. No one deserves to be called the greatest chess player of all time because it wouldn't be accurate and fair to compare players' achievements through time. The closest we can come up with will be the "greatest player of his generation" accolade. Capablanca was the best of his era, Fischer the best of his, and Kasparov the best of his time.
Dec-22-08  walker: <shintaro go> u r yong, but wise...and as an old man to a yongster...never tatoo yourself or use for avatar a famous chessplayer. Never become one of our board's idiots...we have a lot of them....the village is big:)
Dec-22-08  TrueBlue: Topalov is the greatest player ever for me, that's all that counts. The fact that some Russian people from this site disagree with me, I don't really care :)
Dec-22-08  shintaro go: <The fact that some Russian people from this site disagree with me, I don't really care :)> I'm sure they feel the same way.
Dec-23-08  HoLySmOkE: <shintaro go: <The fact that some Russian people from this site disagree with me, I don't really care :)> I'm sure they feel the same way.>

So let us stop..

Dec-23-08  Andrijadj: Yes,indeed, vishy and gata dominated the world chess those days, but the distant kings(kasparov and karpov)were too much for them...
Dec-23-08  mkrk17: <<If Topalov wins Vishy...>>

Pls..lets not think of the impossible. Topalov is the most inconsistent of all players. Within a game, he builds up a huge advantage, then blunders to let it all go down the drain, then his opponent blunders in return, then topa wins the game.

Vishy Anand plays at a totally different level..

Vishi plays on the same level, but a different game. The one who playes on the different level from those two is Kramnik.

So true..

Only a stupid person can think this is true!!!

Chess game is one by the one that makes fewer or no mistakes. Guess who is that person at the moment?!?

Dec-23-08  walker: <KKDEREK> Russia as a chess power is over. Finito. The End. Konec.
Dec-23-08  walker: Kramnik was demolished, Svidler was demolished here...who else?
Dec-23-08  Augalv: <KKDEREK: Kramnik fanboys are bleeding! Nice year!!>

We are not dude, Kramnik has won absolutely everything. Topalov hasn't, he lost the unified crown in Elista. Maybe you are are bleeding.

<Theres nothing to discuss about him (of course..Hes DONE.)>

LOL. He is not. Kramnik is taking a well deserved break, and will come back even stronger.

Nice year to you too.

Dec-23-08  Augalv: <walker> you are funny.
Dec-23-08  walker: <Augalv> Don't you see that the Russian are gone(almost). The WC is Indian. The number 1 is Bulgarian. The most promising younger players are Armenians, Azeri, Norwegian, Philipino...Artificially pumped Soviet school is in ruins. The last time when a Russian "won" the title it was the Elista sham. Vishy showed the world that the so called "champion" was just a pupped of ilumizhanov and the post-Communist mafia. I don't see any Russians among the first 10 in the next decade. Merry Christmas!
