Sep-26-13 | | Strongest Force: Tugas, I believe Kaspy also had 11/13. |
Sep-26-13 | | HSOL: Strongest Force: 365chess has Kasparov on 10½/13 in the 1980 WJC in Dortmund. I think it's the only time he played? |
Sep-26-13
 | | perfidious: Dortmund was indeed Kasparov's sole appearance in the World Junior-he was already too strong for such an event. With a rating of 2595 going in, what was there to play for except the glory of the Motherland? |
Sep-26-13 | | dumbgai: For those that are unaware, there were a lot fewer players back then with GM ratings, especially among juniors. Kasparov's rating of 2595 back then made him one of the top players in the world among ALL players, and far ahead of the other top juniors. For example, Nigel Short, who finished 3rd in that tournament, was rated 2360. |
Sep-26-13 | | dx9293: <kardopov> Of course Fischer was a legitimate World Champion, and one of the greatest players, but I don't think he should be held up as a shining example of "taking on all comers." When Fischer wasn't sure he could win, he either didn't play or found something to complain about. Steinitz, Karpov, and Kasparov (there are others, but especially these three) stick out in my mind as being willing to take on anyone, anywhere, and not give a f***. |
Sep-26-13 | | dx9293: A 2595 rating for a junior, in 1980, is simply mind-boggling. Gazza was 15th in the world at that time!
In January 1981 Kasparov was 6th, and by July 1982 reached 2nd. In January 1984 he reached #1 and stayed there for the rest of his career except for July 1985 (Karpov overtook him for the last time) and January 1996 (when he was "only" shared 1st with Kramnik). |

Sep-26-13 | | Strongest Force: If Kaspy didn't get 11/13 I am sure Shark did. Somebody can look this up? I am almost sure Kaspy got 11. Short was second with 9.5. Shark may have had 12. |

Sep-26-13 | | wych: <wych: I don't know what his score was in 2003.> Actually, I've just had another look at Mamedyarov's CG records, & it appears that he won in 2003 with 10 points. |

Sep-26-13 | | wych: <Strongest Force: If Kaspy didn't get 11/13 I am sure Shark did. Somebody can look this up? I am almost sure Kaspy got 11.> My conclusion from Kasparov's CG records is that his score in 1980 was 10.5. Therefore, in answer to your enquiry, this is what I think: Kasparov 1980 10.5 points
Mamedyarov 2003 10 points
Mamedyarov 2005 10.5 points
I do not know whether Yu Yangyi's score of 11 points in 2013 constitutes a record or not. |
Sep-26-13 | | Maatalkko: William James Lombardy won the 1957 World Junior Championship with a perfect 11/11. Of course, the competition was not as difficult back then, but he also defeated Spassky in junior competition and qualified for an Interzonal (which he didn't play), so Lombardy was definitely a very strong junior for his time. |
Sep-26-13 | | Strongest Force: When Kaspy won i remember with my own eyes seeing that he had 11 and Short had 9.5. I got into online fight with GM L'Ami over wether Shark would have had his run-away-score if Nak had not missed his flight and played against Shark. You guys need to cite where your info comes from. |

 | | JointheArmy: Here are the links to every game Kasparov played during the 1980 World Junior Championship (Dortmund). I don't know the exact round for every game, but all 13 games are listed below. W = Win, D = Draw and L = Loss.
Round 1 (?) W -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 2 W -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 3 W -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 4 D -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 5 W -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 6 (?) W -- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/nph-... Round 7 (?) Sep-26-13 | | whiteshark: I take my hat off to Yu! |
Sep-26-13 | | wych: <Strongest Force: When Kaspy won i remember with my own eyes seeing that he had 11 and Short had 9.5...You guys need to cite where your info comes from.> The relevant information can be pieced together from records on this site & others (eg 365Chess.com), which can be cross checked against each other. (NB On that basis, I conclude that Short got 9 points in 1980, not 9.5.) |
Sep-26-13 | | wych: <Strongest Force> Further to my post above, the final standings table for the 2005 Championship can be found on the ChessBase website. (It shows Mamedyarov on 10.5/13.) |
Sep-26-13 | | jusmail: Which are the great games in the tournament worth further study? |
Sep-26-13 | | RedShield: The book <Fighting Chess>, on Garry's early career, confirms that he scored 10.5 points and Short 9. |
Sep-26-13 | | dumbgai: Special kudos to Wang Yiye, a 15 year old from China rated 2258. Wang scored 8.5/13 for a TPR of 2514, and gained 68 rating points. |
Sep-26-13 | | FISCHERboy: Dominant performance from Yu. If Wei Yi continues to play in more (and stronger) tournaments, he will definitely become a World Junior champion, say two to three years. Daniil Dubov and Illya Nyzhnyk stand in his way. The two stronger juniors, Wesley So and Anish Giri, let their chances slip away, so this should not be difficult for Wei, Dubov and Nyzhnyk to share dominance for three years or so. Ray Robson can try and spoil the party next year, though. |
Sep-26-13
 | | perfidious: <Maatalkko>: Minor point: Lombardy's win over Spassky was in what was then known as the World Student Team event, for which all players under 26 were eligible. Both players were 23 that year, so not exactly juniors. Believe there were pundits who regarded Lombardy as a greater talent than Fischer-after the former won the Junior at Toronto, and before the latter won the US Closed event. |
Sep-26-13 | | Strongest Force: What about Sharks 12 points? What did he do in his first championship win? Btw, i dont see how anyone can fully trust info comming from this site. |
Sep-26-13 | | wych: <Strongest Force: What about Sharks 12 points? What did he do in his first championship win? Btw, i dont see how anyone can fully trust info comming from this site.> (See my posts above.) It appears that Mamedyarov got 10 points when he won the first time (in 2003) & 10.5 points when he won the second time (in 2005). He did not get 12 points on either occasion. All the games in question are available not only on CG but also on 365Chess.com, & the two sites agree with each other. |
