The 17th Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares, held from February 28th to March 10th, was heralded as the strongest tournament ever. Six of the world's top players competed in a double round robin format. They were: World Champion Garry Kasparov (Elo rated #1 in the world), Viswanathan Anand (#2), Vladimir Kramnik (#3), Alexey Shirov (#4), Peter Leko (#6), and FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman (#31). Khalifman was a late replacement for Alexander Morozevich (#5).
Kramnik and Kasparov finished tied for first, inseparable by the tie-breaks laid down in the rules. They did not want any coin toss or blitz playoff, and were declared joint winners. Kasparov conceded the trophy to his former second. Kramnik vs Kasparov, 2000 (Round 8) picked up the official best game prize. The award for hardest fighter was given to Kasparov.
