Jul-06-14 | | Mating Net: How about a game between Arjen Robben vs. Robin van Persie? That would be a Dandy Double Dutch! |
Jul-06-14 | | jphamlore: Anish Giri has owned the Dutch Championship so convincingly there is no longer any point for him to play in this event? |
Jul-06-14 | | dx9293: Giri doesn't play for the same reason Nakamura, Carlsen, and Caruana no longer play in their national championships: they are much too strong to play against 2500-2600 GMs. |
Jul-06-14
 | | perfidious: As Larsen did not when one of the elite; in his case, the disparity in strength was even greater. |
Jul-07-14 | | SimonWebbsTiger: Anish is playing Biel this year. (Starts July 12.) |
Jul-07-14 | | dakgootje: Yeah I'd gamble it's mainly due to Biel rather than the strength difference. Van Wely, Tiviakov and L'ami are still 2650 or something, so he wouldn't be really guaranteerd to win the championship. |
Jul-07-14 | | mrandersson: To be fair I think players should at least try and enter there national championship regardless how high there elo is. I mean it would be nice to get more games under there belt and play to play on home soil would be nice. Plus you could use this as comp to test out any opening plans you have been looking at it’s a win win in a sense. I know this field doesn't have a super gm but as we seen in the Norway comp last month with Agdestein .All thou he didn't win a game he played high class players and came out with a score that was in fairness quite high. |

Jul-07-14 | | waustad: Please remember that these people play for a living. If it doesn't look like playing in a tournament is going to help pay the bills, they don't go. Many players mentioned don't live near the playing venue for most of the year, so it could wind up costing them money to play. In the case of Larsen, for example, he'd have had to travel to Denmark from Argentina. |
Jul-07-14
 | | HeMateMe: Larsen spent his life in Argentina? |
Jul-07-14 | | SimonWebbsTiger: @<HMM>
Yes, Larsen re-located to S. America (and spent time in the Canary Islands too) where he remained until his passing in 2010. His last wife is Argentinian. |
Jul-07-14
 | | perfidious: <waustad> When Larsen last played for the Danish Championship, he was not yet in Argentina; believe he was then living, as noted by <Simon>, in the Canaries. In 1975, he played a match with reigning national champion Gert Iskov and very nearly Fischerised him: +5 =1. As to playing professionally, when I return to live poker, I will go where the money is; that is axiomatic. |
Jul-07-14 | | bystander: <Jul-07-14 Waustad: Please remember that these people play for a living.> As far as I know, Wouter Spoelman is not a professional at the moment, but he is leading after two rounds (wins against L'Ami and Reinderman) |
Jul-09-14 | | Caissanist: I believe I remember an interview in Chess Life where Larsen said that he hadn't played in the Danish Championship since 1964. Funny how a throwaway line like that can stick in your head for so long. |
Jul-09-14 | | Gryz: Let's hope Tiviakov wins today. Or else we'll have 2 full rounds with nothing but draws. |
Jul-09-14 | | MountainMatt: <Gryz> Ask and ye shall receive. :) |
Jul-09-14 | | Gryz: Well, I saw that 3 games had drawn already. And Tiviakov was +1.8 ahead. So it wasn't a surprise. What is a surprise is that half the field is +1 and the other half is -1. |
Jul-12-14 | | geeker: L'Ami suffered a horrible fiasco with Black against van Wely in round 6. 1. Nf3 f5, then 1-0 (14). |
Jul-13-14 | | Gryz: Van Wely and Tiviakov ended both at the top spot. Van Wely won the tie-break 2-0. Congratulations to KingLoek, the Dutch Champion ! I'm wondering where Giri is playing. I thought he would play in Dortmund this week. But obviously he's not. |
Jul-13-14
 | | WannaBe: Giri is at Biel. |
