Amsterdam OHRA (1989) |
"Judit Polgar's first appearance in the Netherlands was at the OHRA tournament in 1989 in Amsterdam. In the open group (there was also a crown group with six players) she won in the first round against Hans Ree as a thirteen-year-old girl. The media turned out en masse. De Volkskrant put her on the front page for that victory and again after the eighth round, after she had achieved a grandmaster norm. The NOS journal was present when she missed the tournament victory in the last round. Together with Gelfand she came third, behind Azmaiparashvili and Psakhis. Judit writes about it in her book 'How I beat Fischer's record' (2012), part 1 of her trilogy 'Judit Polgar Teaches Chess'. After a number of good results she was initially invited to the crown group, but her father wisely judged that that was too ambitious. ... It was Judit's first visit to the Netherlands, accompanied by her mother. Judit felt that one disadvantage of her rapid Elo rise was that she was no longer invited with her entire family. The organisers were now more interested in her as a top chess player than in the three sisters." (Schaaksite.nl, transl.) "People who visited the playing hall on the final day of the OHRA tournament were treated to a quite curious sight. On the arcade on the second floor of the Amsterdam Crest Hotel stood a long queue of people waiting. (…) Until then, scenes like these had only occurred during the Timman-Jussupow match in Tilburg (…) This time, a small, thirteen-year-old girl was the centre of attention."
