May-31-08  percyblakeney: Khalifman going for a perfect score this year, and only one of his four games with white is longer than 18 moves.
Jun-01-08  timhortons: dynamic is grandmaster mihai suba handle at chessgames.com
Jun-01-08  cannibal: What a dramatic game, Andersson vs. Khalifman!

Totally symmetric up to move 12, and what's more, following there game from last year's edition up to 13.h3. Now last year, Khalifman answered 13. ... h6 and offered a draw, but this year he came up with the devilish improvement 13. ... a6!!

Andersson, thrown out of his preparation, had to go into deepest thought, and finally found the saving reply: 14.Rfd1, accompanied by a draw offer of his own...

Jun-01-08  percyblakeney: <cannibal> Dramatic indeed, and here is the game they improved on:

Ulf Andersson vs Khalifman, 2007

Mateo: Another ending for Andersson. A well-known variation of the French he often played on the Black side.

  Mateo: and draw!
Jun-02-08  vonKrolock: Beliavsky vs Timman after black's 16th turns to be a very interesting game, with clouds quickly gathering around the black castle. Already a 17.♘d5 would be hard to meet
Jun-02-08  Nikita Smirnov: So looks like ol' good Nigel is winning now.Well I tipped him as favourite in this event but I thought that the others would do more of a fight out of this.

Sad that Kaspy isn't here or R.J.F.

Jun-03-08  minasina: http://www.clubulregilor.ro/live/tf... LIVE GAMES start at 15:30 East European Summer Time (GMT +3). This is local Bazna (Sibiu) time now: http://www.worldtimezone.com/time/w...

(If this is the final round, maybe they start earlier?)

Jun-03-08  malthrope: <minasina: [...] (If this is the final round, maybe they start earlier?)>

Nope! It started right on time! The same time as usual... ;) After 15 minutes of play I'm happy to report that there are no draws yet! ~lol~ As, Nigel (who has the 'Bye' this round) is just smiling and watching. <grin> Congrats to the new King of Kings! :)

Jun-03-08  cannibal: Beliavsky seems to be out for blood against Andersson. I mean, against Andersson's repertoire, he could just play into another Exchange Slav, and most likely get an easy short draw, but instead he chose the Leningrad Dutch.
Jun-03-08  malthrope: Indeed <cannibal> :) Big Al always <tries> in his games! :) Looks like have we a Chess position of interest...

Andersson-Beliavsky

The position after 11... Nc7 ;)

Jun-03-08  e4ia: Hi Mal:

What "...King's Tournament"?!

They ought to name it
"Bazna Artists Tournamemt" as part of their annual art festival as apparently everyone draws there very well!
Just look at that cross-tangle above.

The trophy has a mugshot of Leko engraved on it.

I gave up watching it...maybe Mal or someone can nominate best game of the tournament...and I'll review that one!

Thanks, if so!

Over and out,

Roger

~ROFL~ Well Short played some very nice middlegame Krushes! ;) Plus there were a few fascinating endgame wins as well! Suba's win over Big Al was nice! And also, Andersson's win over Portisch as well... :^)

Jun-03-08  e4ia: Hi Mal:

LOL coin return...
thanks for the game refs!
perhaps ""...you'll be back"
with another game or two from final rounds

Thanks again!

Well, this is good news re Gata-Toalov funding

"President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has announced that the World Championship Challenger Match between Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Gata Kamsky (USA) will take place in Lvov, Ukraine in November 2008.

The organiser offered a prize fund of 750,000 USD and to hold the match on the “neutral” territory of Ukraine, as the players wanted to avoid Bulgaria or the USA. President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov guarantees the organiser's offer by backing the event from his personal finances.

FIDE Presidential Board acknowledged the offer as well as the guarantee and assigned Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos to conclude the final contracts and to check the availability of the finances. The Match will be held in dates between November 26th and December 14th 2008."

chessdom report on the FIDE board meeting just completed.

Yep! Looks like they will fight these last 3 games out! ;)

<Well, this is good news re Gata-Topalov funding>

All hail the mighty Chessdom! They are best at getting the low down scoop! :^)

Jun-03-08  pawnofdoom: Khalifman ties for third by drawing all of his games? Wow.
Jun-04-08  cade: Khalifman is a super lamer.
Jun-05-08  wallytherhino: The spread is very clean in this tournament.

Min: -2 (Sokolov,Timman,Vaganian)
Max: +4 (Nigel)

Jun-05-08  DarthStapler: Khalifman - more like Drawlifman, amirite?
Jun-06-08  wallytherhino: Alexander Khalifman (+0-0=10)

Wow the only player in the tournament to not win or lose a game!

Another interesting fact of this tournament! 5 Players maintained even in this tournament. Those Five players are:

Alexander Khalifman
Mihai Suba
Henrique Mecking
Andrei Murariu
Alexander Beliavsky

What was the cause of Khalifman's no win / lose this tournament?

Jun-06-08  sneaky pete: Could the effect no win/lose be explained by the cause all draws?
