Introduction
The Counties' Chess Association held its annual meeting at Malvern during the week commencing Monday August 5th, 1872, and by the kind invitation of Dr. Grindrod, at the Winter Promenade, Townsend House. The beautiful grounds were thrown open to the visitors, and croquet, &c., as well as chess playing was the order of the day. Thanks to those in authority the meeting was a great success, the classes were well filled (the first class beyond exception), the weather was all that could be desired, and the residents, the Rev. C. E. Ranken and Mr. Fisher, were as hospitable as the elasticity of their houses would permit. Among those present we noticed the Lord Lyttleton (President), the Hon. J. Roper Curzon, Mr. Staunton, Mr. Lowenthal, Mr. Avery, Dr. Philson (Cheltenham), Mrs. Ranken, Mrs. Feddon (sic), Mrs. Scott, &c. (1)
Note
Ellis vs. Scott was a double forfeit and scored against both players.
