Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Championship (2000)

The first European Championship was an 11-round Swiss held in the Palasport hall in Saint Vincent, Aosta Valley, northwestern Italy, 3-14 July 2000. Rest day: 9 July. The European Chess Union had decided it was about time to have a European Champion, and a tournament qualifying European players for FIDE's World Championship cycle. The Val d'Aosta organizers won the bid (ahead of Biel and others), and invited 120 strong players, including 25 IMs and 45 GMs (of which 16 were rated >2600). Time control: 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 more minutes for the next 20 moves, followed by 10 more minutes to finish the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 60,000 euros. First prize: a brand new Fiat Punto car, worth 10,000 euros. The top two players would qualify for the FIDE World Championship Knockout Tournament (2000).

Pavel Tregubov won on Buchholz tiebreak ahead of Aleksandrov, Markowski and Kharlov, all four with 8/11.
