American Open (2003)

The 39th Annual American Open, held in Los Angeles November 27-30, saw 230 players compete in five sections. Tying for first in the 43-player Master section, which included 7 GMs and 8 IMs, were GMs Suat Atalik and Pavel Blatny, and IM Varuzhan Akobian. It is worth noting that Akobian had spent the previous five days playing in the Gufeld Memorial (2003), in which he earned a GM norm, making a total of 18 games in nine days!
