gmhammer: I chose the baseball myself! It's so cool, and round. I thought the "Premium member"-thingy was a touch too boring. Anyhow, I am playing - but with a major cold I got before/during the 8th round. I'll make the best of it - should be a lot of fun at least!

Best wishes,
Jon Ludvig

Feb-17-11  parmetd: Here is a much better way to see ICC blitz ratings then getting on the server: http://staff.cs.utu.fi/~juhkivij/ch...

Well, it was after you caught the cold you started winning, so I wouldn't be too worried :) Very nice win in the 9th round, btw.

Best of luck!

ketchuplover: GMHAMMER did you ever play at Mainz? Sounds like it's ending. Thoughts?
Feb-17-11  crazybird: http://online.aeroflotchess.org/fin...

With one round left, 6 qualifier spots for World Blitz 2011, the current top 10 (in order) are:

Andreikin, Ponomariov, Mamedyarov, So, Pridorozhni, MVL, Sasha, Mamedov, Gata, Vitigov

Feb-17-11  crazybird: World Blitz qualifiers and top 6 after 9 rounds are

Mamedyarov, Ponomariov, Andreikin, Tomashevsky, So, Vitiugov

Feb-17-11  wordfunph: <crazybird> thanks for the heads up..
Feb-17-11  Ezzy: Stunning performance by Wesley So in the blitz, considering he was suffering in the 'open' and made a difficult decsion to withdraw. What a courageous fightback!

Another great performance from Tomashevsky and Vitiugov who also tied for first in the 'open.' Nice payday for those two.

Feb-17-11  fisayo123: <ezzy> how did it go in the blitz. Please tell.
Feb-17-11  Ezzy: <fisayo123:>

Top 6 qualify for the World blitz championship.

Feb-17-11  Shams: <Ezzy> A lot of big names didn't make the cut. How are the other WBC spots allocated?

HeMateMe: Does the blitz begin on Friday?
Feb-17-11  Kinghunt: <HeMateMe: Does the blitz begin on Friday?>

The blitz is already over. Look down about half a page.

Feb-17-11  Jim Bartle: "<HeMateMe: Does the blitz begin on Friday?>

The heck with bullet! This blitz was over before it started.

Feb-17-11  crazybird: A nice collection of pics from Aeroflot Blitz. Doesn't seem like they used DGT boards

Feb-18-11  Don Cossacks: Well it's just blitz...
Feb-18-11  parmetd: crazybird is that completely correct? Cause last year some people from Tal Memorial turned down blitz and some people from Tal Memorial already qualified (so in essence a double spot)...
Feb-18-11  crazybird: <parmetd> you are right, there were some replacements last year (one i think was Andreikin). I've read at another place that the participants would be Top 6 Aeroflot Blitz + Top 10 on FIDE rating list + 4 organizer nominees. I am not sure which is correct, perhaps someone else can clarify.
Feb-18-11  Ezzy: <crazybird: perhaps someone else can clarify.>

I think you are correct in this -

<crazybird: These 6 + 10 from Tal memorial + 4 nominees= World Blitz Championship>

If anybody withdraws, then they just invite somebody else.

The qualifiers for the 2010 tournament are mentioned here - I don't think anything has changed.

Feb-18-11  AuN1: after the tal memorial this past year, i believe the organizers said that they did not plan on holding the blitz championship immediately after the super-tournament. they said it was making less and less sense to have both events back to back.
Feb-18-11  Don Cossacks: About Blitz chess:
"A player who plays 100 games at G/90 or slower during the year is likely to improve at a much greater rate than one who plays half of that or almost all games at 30 minutes or faster." - Dan Heisman
