MissScarlett: What do we think of the idea that La Bourdonnais returned to France, on the pretext of urgent business, because he feared that McDonnell was becoming his superior?

jnpope: Sounds like La Bourdonnais was having a profitable time at the club:

"In playing with Macdonnell, the stake was very small; and La Bourdonnais was always eager to finish the game, that he might receive his half-crown customers, who played with him till nearly midnight, after he had finished with our countryman, all receiving large odds."
<Chess Player's Magazine>, v2 1864, pp161-166

I don't think La Bourdonnais was too worried about losing a few more games (or even another match) to McDonnell if it meant that he could keep the half-crown customer gravy train rolling. I suspect La Bourdonnais would have enjoyed hanging out in London a little longer in his "berry patch" picking up quick cash. So whatever business he had in France was probably more valuable, hence his departure.

MissScarlett: Think I've seen it. Been on something of a La Bourdonnais - McDonnell binge today, since I visited Kensal Green cemetery this morning. Primarily to see Staunton's grave, but also found the others. Took me an hour though.

In 1934, John Keeble couldn't locate La Bourdonnais's grave, but he didn't have the benefit of Findagrave.com.
