Introduction
"The tournament was begun with sixteen entries, as follows: E. M. Harris, S. C. Blodgett, Jr., Francis Pratt, A. N. Cunningham, H. S. Grant, George M. Smith, H. Rosenberg, Andrew Murray, William L. Burroughs, John A. Belcher, Joseph W. Belcher, George Bucklin, James Hill, G. S. Robinson.
The pairs were drawn by lot and the winners then played with winners, the losers in each round retiring. As the chances of victory were narrowed more and more the interest became more intense, and the last games were watched by a large throng of spectators." (1)
Conclusion
At 7 p.m. Dr. E. M. Harris was declared the champion of the State for the year 1887, and the holder of the prize cup, valued at $50. Mr. G. S. Robinson won the second prize—a fine set of Staunton men; Mr. H. Rosenberg the third—a treatise on chess, "Cooke's Synopsis of Chess Openings." (2)
