Introduction
City of London Chess Club.
Another Handicap Tourney on a grand scale is being organised at this club. Nearly forty-eight competitors (the full number) have already entered the lists. Amongst the names we notice Herr Zukertort, Messrs Bird, Wisker, Potter, De Vere, Coburn, Dr. Ballard, and others. There will be four prizes: first, £5; second, £3; third, £2 10s.; fourth £1 10s.; and the losers on the first round will afterwards contend for the third and fourth prizes, and the winners for the first and second. Members desirous of entering should at once send in their names, as the tourney will commence next week. Every competitor will be obliged to play at least one game a week. (1)
In the Handicap Tournament of the City of London Ches Club the forty-eight competitors have been divided into six class: the first class to give class 2 the odds of pawn and move, to class 3 pawn and two, to class 4 the knight, to class 5 the rook, and to class 6 knight and bishop. The second class to give class 3 pawn and move, &c., in proportion. The following is the classification:
1st class: Bird, De Vere, Lord, Potter, Wisker and Zukertort.
2nd class: Ballard, Coburn, Cox, De Soyres, Lambert and Major Martin.
3rd class: Bussey, Chappell, down, Eshwege, Mayow, Nicholson, Pfahl, G. H. Rippin, Stevens, Vyse, Watts, and Woodward.
4th class: Beveridge, Cohen, Connford, Heinke, Maas, MacLeod, Mainland, Manning, Morris, Leigh, Rabbeth, Reynolds, E. C. Rippin, Sothers, Webb, and Zappert.
5th class: Gastineau, Ingold, Lowson, and Pannell.
6th class: Cutler, Lovelock, and Pizzi. (2)
City of London Chess Club. In accordance with the same regulations as were already successfully adopted in previous years, the twenty-four winners of the first round form a separate section (Section I.), pairing off for the first and second prize, while the losers (Section II.) play in the same way for the third and fourth prizes. The losers, of either section, in any of the subsequent rounds will be thrown out altogether until it comes to the final pool of three. (3)

City of London Chess Club. The third round of the Handicap Tournament is now completed, and some progress has been made for the fourth round. The play of those pairs that had not finished the third round when we last reported the score resulted as follows: In section I., for the first and second prizes, Lord beat Cox two to one and one draw; Zukertort beat Cohen two games and two draws; and Wisker, after having won and lost one against Sothers, forfeited the deciding game through inability to attend. In section II., for the third and fourth prizes, Pfahl beat Webb both games. For the fourth round, section I., De Vere won one and drew two against Zappert. In section II. Maas beat Vyse two to one and one draw, thereby entering the final pool of three players; and Lambert won one against Rippin. (9)
City of London Chess Club. The handicap tournament is now entering upon its final and most interesting stage. Since our last report De Vere beat Zappert another game, and the former is now the first who has qualified himself for the final pool of three players in Section I., for the first and second prizes. In the same section, Zukertort won the first game against Osborne. In Section II., for the third and fourth prizes, Ballard won the first game againt Pfhal. (10)
City of London Chess Club. In section I of the Handicap Tournament for the first and second prizes, Zukertort won another game of Osborne; and the former therefore enters the pool, and will have to play next against De Vere. Lord and Sothers have not finished the fourth round yet. In section 2, for the third and fourth prizes, G. H. Rippin, after winning one game and losing one against Lambert, scored the deciding game by default of his opponent, and the former therefore enters the final pool for which Maas has already qualified himself. Dr. Ballard won the first game against Pfahl in the fourth round of the same section. (11)
City of London Chess Club Handicap. The following is now the state of play: Section A, for the first and second prizes, last round or pool; De Vere, won 1, v. Zukertort, won 1. The other members of the pool will be either Mr Lord or Mr Sothers. Section B, for third and fourth prizes, last round or pool: Maas, won 1, v. Rippin, 0. Dr. Ballard, having beaten Mr Pfahl, has now become the third member of this pool. (12)
City of London Chess Club. The match between Zukertort and De Vere, for the first two games in the final pool of the Handicap Tournament of this club, has been decided in favour of Herr Zukertort, who has won the odd game since our last report, and therefore stands the best chance of winning the first prize. (13)
City of London Chess Club. The handicap tournament of this club has taken an unexpected turn. In Section I., for the first and second prizes, Sothers has beaten Zukertort two to one, the former receiving the odds of the knight. If Sothers (receiving the same odds) succeeds in winning against De Vere, he will be entitled to the first prize, and Zukertort win the second. But if De Vere beats Sothers the three combatants will stand even, and the pool must commence afresh. For Section II., for the third and fourth prizes, Maas has come out victor, having beat both his competitors, Messrs Ballard and Rippin, who will have to contest a match of two games for the fourth prize. (14)
Maas 2 v. G. H. Rippin 0
Ballard 1 v. Maas 0 (15)
Ballard 1 v. G. H. Rippin 1 (16)
City of London Chess Club. In the handicap pool, section A, for the first and second prizes, De Vere, since our last, has won 1 against Sothers, the second game between De Vere and Sothers remaining unfinished. In section B, for third and fourth prizes, the third prize being won by Mr Maas, Mr G. H. Rippin has won 1 against Dr. Ballard for the fourth prize in the competitions. (17)
City of London Chess Club. The Handicap of this club is now completely finished, and the four prizes have been awarded as follows:
1st, Mr Sothers; 2nd Herr Zukertort; 3rd, Mr Maas; and 4th, Dr. Ballard. (18)
