Format: 42 games of restricted openings, victor must score 1½ points or more than his opponent.
Introduction
At the conclusion of their prior match which had ended in a 6-6 tie, a restricted match was discussed.
After a week or two to recuperate, and perhaps pass the warm weather, the same two will start a rather novel match modeled on the restricted match in checkers. The details as far as settled are as follows: Fifteen of the most marked chess openings will be selected, and after deciding by lot the first move, such player will draw from this list and must play the game so drawn. On the completion of this game the other draws from a similar list for his opening; for the third game number one again draws from the fourteen remaining games on his list, and so on until each list has been exhausted and thirty games have been played. In this way their knowledge of each of the respective openings will be tested and increased. (1)
The novel restricted match mentioned last week has been decided on. The arrangements about as there outlined are agreed on, except that the list of openings has been lengthened to include 26 of the most used debuts. As each player is to play the attack in each one of these, a grand total of 52 games will constitute the match. As Steinitz would say, the winner of the first game would obtain the advantage of playing for a draw, except for the agreement that if at the termination one player be not more than one game ahead the match shall be declared drawn. (2)
The restricted match beween Ferris and G. Tatnall which we have before explained, has at last begun. After a careful inspection and elimination the list of openings was reduced to twenty-one, making the match consist of forty-two games. The openings retained were: The Petroff's and Philidor's defences, Ruy Lopz, Scotch, two Knights, Giuoco Piano, the Evans gambit, three games, (a game each at the Normal Evans, the Compromised Defence and the gambit declined), the King's Bishop gambit, the Salvio, Algaier, Kiezeritski, Muzio gambits and King's gambit declined. The Queen's gambit accepted and declined. The French and Sicilian defences, Center gambit and Steinitz gambit. (3)
