Introduction
The tourney on the displacement of pieces principle took place in the week commencing January 7, after the other tourneys were over. The chief prize, value 5 guineas, was liberally given by the Rev. J. Greene, President of the Bristol and Clifton Chess Club, who kindly took the trouble and the additional expense of coming himself to witness the contest. The method of displacement, only made known at the time of play, consisted in an interchange of the positions of Bishops and Knights. There were six competitors, and the result was as follows:—
Mr Ensor, 4 games, 1st prize.
Messrs Newham, Ranken and Skipworth, 3 games each; divided 2d and 3 prizes, owing to want of time to play it out.
Mr Thorold, 2 games; Mr Carroll, 1 game. (1)
Conclusion
Special prize: £5 5s. 0d. (given by Rev. J. Greene, Clifton), Mr. Ensor, Nottingham; 2nd, Rev. C. E. Ranken (Malvern), Rev. A. B. Skipworth, and Rev. W. L. Newham, equal. (2)
