Introduction
The Counties' Chess Association, in combination with the Lincoln County Chess Association, will hold its annual meeting in the Guild Hall, Boston, during the week commencing Monday, January 19th, 1880, when prizes will be offered in the following classes:
Handicap Classes.—One or more will be arranged during the week, in which the £5, liberally offered by G. W. Medley, Esq., from the "Lowenthal Fund," will be competed for. (1)
In the Handicap the London Amateurs, H. E. Bird and Rev. G. A. Macdonnell were required to conced the odds of drawn games to all First-Class players. (2)
Participants
Class 1A.—H. E. Bird and Rev. G. A. MacDonnell. Giving Class 1 the odds of a draw as a win; Class 2 pawn and move; Class 3 pawn and two moves; Class 4 a knight; Class 5 a rook.
Class 1.—Rev.J. Coker, Rev. C. E. Ranken, A. C. Rowley, Rev. A. B. Skipworth, E. Thorold, and Rev. W. Wayte. Giving Class 2 the odds of a draw as a win; Class 3 pawn and move; Class 4 a knight; Class 5 a rook.
Class 2.—Rev. J. de Soyres. Class 3 pawn and moves; Class 4 a knight; Class 5 a rook.
Class 3.—H. Jackson, Rev. J. S. Jackson, Rev. W. L. Newham, H. E. Tudor. Giving Class 4 pawn and move; Class 5 pawn and two moves.
Class 4.—W. C. Simmonds and H. D. Simpson. Giving Class 5 pawn and move.
Class 5.—Rev. C. R. Andrews.
Conclusion
In the Winners' Round of this handicap the Rev. G. A. Macdonnell and the Rev. W. Wayte had to contend for first and second prizes, but the committee subsequently decided to divide the amount between them. Mr. H. E. Bird secured the first prize in the Losers' Round on Wednesday last. (2)
Messrs. Macdonnell and Wayte therefore divided the first and second prizes, Mr. Bird obtained the third prize, and Mr. Coker the fourth. (3)
