Introduction
Class I. Open to all provincial amateurs, and to metropolitan amateurs by invitation; subscription of £1 1s. The first prize will be of the value of £10; the second prize of £4; the third (if there are eight entries), £1 10s. The winner of the first prize in this class last year will have one game deducted from his score at subsequent meetings. An addition to this rule comes into force at Leamington—viz., that the second prize-taker at that meeting shall have half a game deducted. (1)
Conclusion
The order of the prizes is therefore, 1st, Ranken; 2nd, Owen; 3rd, Wayte. (5)
Notes
The Field gives Cook a loss vs Wayte and Wayte a win vs Cook; Rowley a win over Cutler and Cutler a draw against Rowley; and also lists Rowley vs Dewar, Cutler vs Coker, and Aspa vs Cutler as "unf."; additionally has Aspa "unf." vs Rowley, but Rowley is given a win over Aspa; mentions Owen won by forfeit over Cutler. The Leamington Spa Courier verbally states Cook lost to Wayte and Wayte beat Cook; Rowley beat Cutler and Cutler drew against Rowley; also mentions that Cutler and Aspa still had a game to play; no mention is made of the Dewar vs Rowely game; Owen is mentioned as winning by forfeit over Cutler. (3)
The Chess-Monthly gives Cook a loss vs Wayte and Wayte a win vs Cook (but mentions Cook had informed them that he drew the game); has a draw entered for both Rowley vs Cutler; has blanks for Aspa vs Cutler and Rowley vs Dewar; no mention is made of Cutler forfeiting to Owen. (4)
The British Chess Magazine has Cook vs Wayte as a draw; gives Rowley a win over Cutler, but Cutler a draw vs Rowley; also indicates the games Cutler vs Aspa and Rowley vs Dewar had remained unplayed; Owen is mentioned as winning by forfeit over Cutler. (5)
