Introduction
A match to test the viability of Mead's defence, 6...Nge7, in the Evans Gambit.
Thompson wrote: "It may, at least, be called a doubtful move, placing the defence in an apparently hazardous position and leaving several methods of procedure at the choice of the attack. On the other hand, however, it probably enable the second player to castle. If it should, in the end prove sound, it will add to the chess reputation of Colonel Mead, its discoverer and champion." An interesting match was commenced between Col. Charles D. Mead, President of the New York Chess Club, and the well-known player James Thompson Esq. Each party had scored one game, and one had been drawn when the match was discontinued on account of the state of Col. Mead's health. (2)
