Amsterdam IBM (1980) |
"The story has been repeating itself, becoming monotonous for some years now: wherever Karpov plays, he wins. For a moment it seemed that the world champion would have difficulty maintaining his supremacy. It was in the sixth round, when, losing to Ribli, he was overtaken by Timman for first place. Two consecutive victories, however, allowed him to stand out again and despite Timman's efforts to catch up with him, he remained alone in the lead until the end, winning the tournament by a good point over his tenacious pursuer. Apart from Karpov, who won - as can be seen - seven games, the Dutch players Timman and Sosonko can be satisfied with their respective results. For Timman, this was, after Bugojno, a happy performance after a long period of disappointment. For Sosonko - the only unbeaten player, along with Timman - the IBM was the confirmation of a whole series of good results. The ex-Soviet once again proved his solidity, drawing 12 games and winning the last two. The big loser was Bent Larsen. It is surprising how often the great Dane's career alternates between periods of brilliant play and success and periods of failure and disappointing performances. His final placement in last place - which initially seemed destined for the young and inexperienced Dutch talent Van der Wiel - will undoubtedly have aroused perplexity in Larsen and his many admirers. But everyone knows that this is a consequence of his style of play and appropriate rehabilitation will soon follow." (Richard Meulders in El Ajedrez, transl.)
