Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Amsterdam IBM (1979)

"... the Soviet grandmasters, who were absent due to the Soviet Spartakiad, and the absence of Grandmaster Timman, who made an unfulfillable extra-honorary request, hindered the efforts to form the best field. The organizational difficulties are also proven by the fact that Grandmaster Faragó ... stepped in at the last minute instead of the invited but absent Dzindzichashvili, so it was understandable that Grandmasters Hort, Sax, Andersson and Smejkal dominated the field in the main competition. As the table proves, they fought a separate battle. After Andersson's uncertain start, the lead fell into the hands of Sax and Hort. It is definitely worth highlighting that the Czechoslovak Hort, although he has participated in many world competitions in recent months, has not played so well for a long time, and has not won such a high-level tournament for a long time. In addition to Sax and Hort, who were fighting for first place, the popular international master Ree, who played well, was set back by four consecutive defeats after a brilliant start. Among the non-prize winners, the English Stean and Sahovic played far below their abilities." (Sakkélet, transl.)

This was the 19th tournament sponsored by IBM. Thirteen rounds in 17 days, starting on Thursday 12 July. Rest days 15, 19, 22 & 27 July. Chief arbiter: Piet Bakker. Donner forfeited his Round 6 game against Smejkal because he mistakenly thought there was a rest day. Sahovic forfeited his last round game against Byrne because he was expected to play at Biel (1979). Byrne had refused to play the game in advance. Hort and Sax shared first place with 9/13.
