This was the 19th tournament sponsored by IBM. Thirteen rounds in 17 days, starting on Thursday 12 July. Rest days 15, 19, 22 & 27 July. Chief arbiter: Piet Bakker. Donner forfeited his Round 6 game against Smejkal because he mistakenly thought there was a rest day. Sahovic forfeited his last round game against Byrne because he was expected to play at Biel (1979). Byrne had refused to play the game in advance.
