Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Alekhine - Levitsky (1913)

This match was played in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire (Russia) from February 28 - March 16.

Alekhine 1 1 1 0 0 1 0 1 1 1 7 Levitsky 0 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 3

A wealthy patron of the St. Petersburg Chess Club, Mr. Nikolay Semenovich Tereshchenko, conceived the idea of a match between Alekhine and Stefan Levitsky, who had done so well in the Vilnius All-Russian Masters (1912) by finishing in third place. He had also won both of his games against Alekhine in that event. A generous prize fund for the match was put up by Tereshchenko, with prizes for both the winner and loser. The principle conditions were: the winner would be the first to achieve seven wins, draws not counting; and the only allowed openings were those starting with 1.e4 e5, except that the Ruy Lopez and Four Knights Opening were excluded - Alexander Alekhine's Chess Games, 1902-1946 by Skinner and Verhoeven.
