Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-11-13  waustad: Thanks cg. With a couple of upsets, like Russia losing, there have been some very strange pairings.
Nov-11-13  Jamboree: Over the last three rounds, 15th-seeded Israel has played the top three teams in the entire tournament: #1 Ukraine, #2 Russia, #3 Georgia. The end total result of all three matches? 6.0-6.0!! Somehow Israel, with players in the 2100s and 2200s, managed to hold the world's elite women players to an even tie. They beat Russia 2.5-1.5, tied Georgia 2-2, and lost to Ukraine 1.5-2.5.

Pretty amazing result sustained over three days - not just a one-day fluke.

Nov-11-13  kevinatcausa: Meanwhile, this isn't exactly turning out to be England's tournament so far.

Nov-13-13  waustad: <HHM>That's Alexandra Kosteniuk.

HeMateMe: <waustad:> No way. She looks like a gypsy channeling Barbara Streisand. (Don't tell her I said that...)
Nov-13-13  vsaluki: Kosteniuk has won 4 in a row. Pogonina is not playing her best chess right now.
Nov-14-13  waustad: <HHM>Actually it is her. Look at the board pairings, she was on second board sitting next to Gunina. Here is a better picture: http://lh4.ggpht.com/-GCuZdJKDifw/U... Here are the pairings that day: http://chess-results.com/tnr115919....

HeMateMe: <waustad:> You're right, it's her (she's gorgeous!) I like her chess bracelet. Do you have photos of the tarot card reading, after the chess round?
Nov-14-13  waustad: Clocks are flaking out again. I've been watching a game pretty much from the beginning and now the person who was way up on time is listed as behind. This happens a lot with the DGT board and clock setups. It is rather a nuisance for the viewer.
Nov-15-13  waustad: With the matchup between Alexandra Kosteniuk and Ticia Gara, I would expect that they'll feature prominently in the photo gallery for today's games. If Chessbase were doing it they certainly would.
Nov-16-13  waustad: Sunday they begin play 4 hours earlier than usual.
Nov-16-13  waustad: Nope, they kept taking pictures of poles with others usually in the background.
Nov-17-13  Calar: Ukraine (Lahno, Ushenina, Muzychuk, Zhukova, Gaponenko) secured the title with a round to go. Congrats :)

Nov-17-13  Calar: Final rankings:

1. Ukraine (15 points)
2. Russia (14 points)
3. Poland (14 points)
4. Georgia (12 points)
5. Armenia (12 points)

Nov-17-13  waustad: Anne Haast had a remarkable tournament picking up a whopping 31.6 elo while going 6.5/7.
