Jun-28-15  Edmontonchessclub: <Hemateme> Basically, Chucky takes care of Chucky. I'll help if he asks, but he doesn't really appreciate offers of help. He waits until hr really needs something, then asks.
Jun-28-15  Edmontonchessclub: <Hemateme> Also, he's here with his wife. So maybe Mrs. Chucky secures his luggage.

HeMateMe: He was robbed in Brazil. Thugs swiped his luggage right out in front of a hotel. I figure it's too cold to run in Edmonton (hypothermia), so the players are probably safe. Carry on.
Jun-28-15  siggemannen: all the favourites won today, no changes in the top
Jun-28-15  PhilFeeley: <HeMateMe> Too cold in Edmonton? In June (soon July)?? Are you serious? Basic geography would tell you Edmonton would enjoy warm weather this time of year, sometimes even hitting 30C+.
Jun-28-15  epistle: Wesley should have played here instead. So his mothers could have tea together.

perfidious: With all the invocations of that person in recent weeks, one would think that on seeing the word 'mother', we have seen half the vocabulary of these stalkers, as was once said of baseball player Alex Johnson.
Jun-28-15  kia0708: Thank you for the link.

HeMateMe: <PhilFeeley: > relax, dude. You're too literal.
Jun-28-15  Edmontonchessclub: In the final round, Wang can tie for 1st if he can beat Harikrishna. Wang has white.

The final round starts one hour earlier than other rounds: 23:00 GMT, 7 PM Eastern, 5 PM local time.

Jun-28-15  Edmontonchessclub: Local Edmonton player FM Vladimir Pechenkin can get an IM norm if he can win his final round game. He has white against IM Aman Hambleton.
Jun-28-15  Edmontonchessclub: The final round is live:

Also on chess24, chessdom and chessbomb.

Jun-28-15  dumbgai: Gardner sure has guts, going for such complicated tactics against Ivanchuk. Looks like he's getting the worst of it, though.
Jun-28-15  Gregor Samsa Mendel: The three mismatches this round have turned out according to expectations.
Jun-28-15  dumbgai: Wang is pressing Harikrishna. His d- and e-pawns are advanced and looking very dangerous.
Jun-29-15  Edmontonchessclub: GM Harikrishna Pentala drew his long last round game, and won the tournament. Ivanchuk, Wang and Ganguly tied for 2nd.
All five GMs, Haessel, Gardner, Matras-Clement and a bunch of other regular Edmonton Chess Club players went to a restaurant, Boston Pizza, 17 people in all. The chess club bought beer and pizza, (and sangria for Ganguly, cranberry juice for Ivanchuk, water for Pentala) and the five GMs sat in the middle of the long table and analysed Shankland's last round game, with Shankland's opponent, WIM Matras-Clement, occasionally jumping in.

Now the tournament is over, I'm back at home, enjoying the fact that it went off without a problem, and most people seemed to enjoy it. My wife is expecting our first baby any day now, so I'll concentrate on her now. See you next year!

HeMateMe: Nice reporting, ECC! You seem to have a lot of driving experience, so I imagine you'll have no trouble getting your wife to the hospital safely when the big moment arrives!
Jun-29-15  epistle: Sometimes it is the husband who panics when the time arrives and is driven to the hospital by the wife

Penguincw: Just a (pointless) observation I see: assuming <cg>'s standings table is correct, I see that there's no "1" in any of the W-L-D columns. For example, at Norway Chess (2015), Topalov has one loss, MVL, Caruana and others have one win, etc. Here, none of that. So apparently, if you win a game, you're going to win at least one more. ;)

P.S. Good fighting spirit by Dale R Haessel and Agnieszka Matras-Clement (no draws)!

Jun-29-15  rookpawn101: Well done ECC and thanks for your regular updates about the tournament. It wish more tournament organizers follow your lead and give us insights of what goes on behind the curtains. Wishing all the best to you and your precious little one.
Jun-29-15  boz: <HeMateMe: Nice reporting, ECC! You seem to have a lot of driving experience, so I imagine you'll have no trouble getting your wife to the hospital safely when the big moment arrives!>

I am reminded of the time I drove my wife to the hospital with our first and only child. The road was riddled with pot holes and I hit every one.

FSR: Not a single Sicilian in the whole tournament. How often do you see that? White played 1.e4 12 times, but Black never responded with 1...c5.
Jun-30-15  PhilFeeley: I assume from the results that no one got their IM or GM norm?

FSR: <PhilFeeley> I believe that is right. Pechenkin would have gotten an IM norm if he had beaten Hambleton in the last round, but he lost.
