Timman - Short (1989) |
"With a draw in the extremely exciting final game, Jan Timman and Nigel Short ended up with a tie in the eighth KRO chess match: 3-3. Both players received 15,000 guilders from the prize pool. It was the fourth time that Timman drew in Hilversum. Previously, he had done so against Korchnoi, Spassky and Yusupov. He won against Portisch and Ljubojevic and suffered defeats against Kasparov and Tal. For Timman it was of the utmost importance not to go down again. After his victories in the first two games and a draw, he suffered two consecutive defeats, partly due to his poor physical condition. "That had not happened to me this year", according to the 38-year-old from Amsterdam. "In the fourth game, for some inexplicable reason, I omitted a move that I had planned to make. I still can't get over it. I completely lost track and in the last part of the game I couldn't see anything at all. And the defeat in the fifth game was a direct result of my state of health. It was really bad at that moment." ... The rest day before the final match came in handy for Timman. He chatted with Vlastimil Hort and looked ahead to the final match of the Candidates Tournament against Anatoly Karpov, which starts on 7 March in Kuala Lumpur. Hort, who has commitments in his adopted homeland of the Federal Republic of Germany, will not know until 7 January whether he will be available as a second. Although Timman had black in the final game and Short had announced that he would let black suffer, he did not avoid a fight and the risks that go with it. ... "This was a good training," Timman reflected. "Regardless of the result. It must be seen completely separately from the duel against Karpov. Even a big victory of mine could not have drawn any conclusions." (Amigoe 22-12-1989 p. 6, transl.) Hilversum, the Netherlands, 13-20 December 1989 Age Elo* 1 2 3 4 5 6
