Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Ter Apel (1996)

"The Ter-Apel chess club in the Netherlands, which has only 15 players, organized a 6-player, category 15 chess tournament in March 1996. The suddenly ill Peruvian Julio Granda Zuniga was replaced at the last minute by the Bosnian living in the Netherlands, Predrag Nikolic. Before the tournament began, the composition of the field was criticized, fearing that there would be too many uninteresting draws. Fortunately, the players refuted this and showed great fighting spirit. The 44-year-old Swede Ulf Andersson, who has competed relatively rarely lately, showed his usual super-safe play. He did not strive for a big advantage, but ruthlessly exploited the slightest mistake of his opponents. Unfortunately, Hungarian player Péter Lékó experienced this firsthand, being only slightly worse than Andersson after a seemingly harmless opening, he had to bow to the Swede's iron-consistent endgame technique in the 91st move. Péter Lékó won a nice victory over Estonian Lembit Oll, but unfortunately lost to Nikolic, who was in good form, and finished only in fifth place." (Sakkélet, transl.)
