<3rd Western Championship
Excelsior, MN
August 4-9, 1902>
In the absence of defending champion MacLeod, <Louis Uedemann> was able to reclaim his crown by a convincing two-point margin.

http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/8... <Lou Da Man!>The tournament grew to 19 players, and even with a couple of dropouts that made for a lot of games to pack into just six days. In addition, several players were clearly not strong enough (Harrumph!) to compete for such a prestigious title as Champion of the Western Chess Association (oh, come on guys, you're only three years old!).
There was talk of screening entrants, but for now the only real change was shifting location to Chicago in 1903. This meant that Uedemann would be hosting (not to mention buying the sandwiches and beer), and hopefully would be distracted during the tournament.
Report from <Checkmate>, October 1902, p. 5:
"The third annual championship tournament of the West began at Excelsior, Minn., Aug. 4, with 19 entries.... The championship was won by Louis Uedemann of Chicago, who took first prize, $100; E.P. Elliott, of Minneapolis, second, $40; W. G. Hine, of Savannah, Mo., and F. F. Wilcox, of Chicago, tied for third place, which was divided, each receiving $15. F. N. Stacy, of Minneapolis, and J. Friedlander, divided fifth prize of $5."
