1931 Nice Consultation

A rather unusual training event was organized by the Cercle Alekhine, a recently founded chess club based in Nice. The world champion Alekhine, and two of the up and coming young stars, Salo Flohr and Gosta Stoltz agreed to participate. These were joined by two local players, Brian Reilly and the Russian emigre L. Monosson, who were both members of the Cercle Alekhine. The event took the form of a consultation tournament of twelve games between the masters, who were partnered in each case by one of the local amateurs. There were three prizes, but only the masters were eligible for these. The first half of the tournament was played in the Palais Mediterranee and the second half in the Cercle Alekhine. The event was easily won by Alekhine, who scored four wins and four draws. Flohr came second with two wins, three draws and three losses and Stoltz third with five draws and three losses. Monosson achieved the best result of the local players by scroing 7½ out of 12 and Reilly achieved 4½ out of 12. A number of the games appeared in various publications annotated by Alekhine himself, as a portend for the future, some were annotated in depth by the young Botvinnik for SHAKHMATNY LISTOK, indicating that the future world champion had already started to make a deep study of the possibility of a match for the world championship some time in the future - <Alexander Alekhine's Chess Games, 1902-1946> by Skinner and Verhoeven.
