Riga 1945 (July 11 - August 7) Latvian Championship

At the end of World War II, chess life was restored in Latvia. Also on November 16, 1944, the Republican Chess Section (chairman - Reinhold Baliņš , Deputy Chairmen - Martins Zvirbulis and Pēteris Šadurskis, Board Members - Alexander Koblenz and Zigfrids Solmanis ) was founded , which in the summer of 1945 (July 11 - August 7) ) organized the Latvian SSR 2nd Chess Championship for Men held at Riga Pioneer Castle .

18 chess players from Riga , Cesis , Liepaja , Valmiera and Ventspils were awarded the title of Latvian champion . Outside the competition, the strong Moscow champion Vladimir Alatorcev and Latvia's stronger chess player Milda Lauberte took part . Alatorcev and Koblenz had just returned from the USSR 14th Chess Championship finals in Moscow, where Koblenz had met the USSR sportsman's rule, so both were considered as tournament favorites. The predictions came true - the masters won almost all the parties, but the finish was first achieved by Alatorcev, but Koblenz won his second Latvian SSR champion.

It should be noted that not all tournament participants managed to finish the tournament. After the 6th round, Knaģis left for the tournament and his results were canceled, but both Valmiera representatives Mūrnieks and Ķemers did not play the last round of the tournament, where their opponents got points without playing.
