1920 <Gedimins Salmins p.8>

-------------------
There is very little news about this period in the life of Fr. Karlis Knauts, author of the "Adv. Albert Melnbard 50 Years" published in the 31st issue of Shah Art Magazine, describes the jubilee achievement of the 2nd Riga Chess Society 1920 Tournament: "A. Melnbardis had learned from Grand Master Aron Nimcovich himself, who at that time was the undisputed ruler of Reiner's Cafe, as the masters Fr Apðenieks and the late A. Hartmanis and H. Matissons had not yet arrived in Riga. " (Emphasis added)

Gada nogalç biedrîbâ bija 48 biedri, to skaitâ meistars Hermanis Matisons, problçmists Pçteris Keirâns, Aleksandrs Kannenebergs, citi pazîztami ðahisti.

At the end of the year , the Riga chess club had 48 members, including Master Hermann Matison, problemist Peter Keiran, Alexander Kanneneberg, and other well-known chess players. H. Matison was the winner of the Society's annual tournament, with a possible score of 91.66%. Participants in this tournament had to play at least 25 games.

1921. gadâ sâkâs un tikai 1923. gadâ beidzâs turnîrs, kuru oficiâli uzskatîja par biedrîbas 1923. gada meistarîbas turnîru. To sâka 11 ðahisti, taèu P. Dreimanis K. Betins, un Z. Machelsons pçc pirmâ riòka izstâjâs. Uzvarçja H. Matisons ar 15 punkteim (+15-2=0), bet Fr. Apsenieks ieòçma otro vietu ar 13.5 punktiem (+13 -3=0). Savstarpçjâs partijâs katrs izcînîja pa uzvarai. Pçdçjais Baltijas meistars Alfreds Hartmanis ar 12 punktiem (+11-4=2) palika treðais.

1921. gada beigâs Rîgas un Kuldîgas ðaha biedrîbas ðaka divu partiju maèu korespondencðaha. Rîgas matadori Fr. Apsenieks, A. Hartmanis, A. Kannebergs, H.Matisons uzvarçja abas partijas. Ne tik labi rîziniekiem veicâs maèa pret Ventspils Ðaha biedrîbu, kurð beidzâs ar rezultâti 1:1

The tournament started in 1921 and ended only in 1923, which was officially considered the Society's 1923 Mastery Tournament. It started with 11 chess players, but P. Dreimanis K. Betin and Z. Machelson withdrew after the first round. H. Matison won with 15 points (+ 15-2 = 0), but Fr. Apsenieks came in second with 13.5 points (+13 -3 = 0). Against each other, each one won a victory. Alfred Hartman, the last Baltic champion, was third with 12 points (+ 11-4 = 2).

At the end of 1921, the Riga and Kuldiga Chess Society held a two game consultation correspondence match. The Riga team with Fr. Apseieks, A. Hartmanis, A. Kannebergs, and H. Matzison won both games. Not so good for the Riga team was their match against the Ventspils Chess Society, which ended with a 1: 1 result.

Atputas 1927. gada 25 februâra numurâ (Nr.121) iespiesta pçdçjâ Apsenieks rediìçtâ nodaïa Pirmâs ðacha uzdevumu atrisinâðanas sacîkstes atrisinâjumi. bet no 8.aprîïa (Nr.127) nodaïas vadîbu pâròçma H. Matisons.

Seans ilga 2.5 stundas.

......

9.februârî RÐK notika âtrspçles turnîrs (28 dalîbnieki). Apsenieks un Matisons beidza turnîru ar 25.5 punktiem. Papildus maèa ar 2:1 uzvarçja Apsenieks. 3. V Petrovs- 22 punktu.

Februâra beigâs "caurbraucot no Krievijas uz Vâciju, uzturçjâs uz Rîgas Ðacha kluba uzaicinâjuma vairâkas dienas Rîga" lielmeistars Jefims Bogoljubov. 28. februâra simultânspçles seansâ viesis 6.5 stundas cînîjâs pret 43 spçlçtâjiem: +22-14=7 (59.3%), bet nopietno partiju ar H. Matisonu beidza neizðíirti.

---

In the issue of February 25, 1927 (No.121), the last chapter edited by Obsessor, Solutions to the First Chess Challenge, is printed. but from 8 April (no.127) the division was headed by H. Matison. Whether the collaboration was interrupted by Apsenieks, or at the initiative of the publisher and editor - this question remains unanswered ...

In 1925, Apseieks started with another convincing victory in speed games. In the RKK tournament on January 9, he scored 93.3% possible points ahead of August Strautman (85%), fast-moving Vladimir Petrov and Voldemar Samuel (83.33% each).

On January 23, Matisons and Apsenieks achieved a high score in the Alternative Simultaneous Session against the 20 players at RSC premises: = 18-0 = 2. The sessions lasted 2.5 hours.

......

On February 9, RSC held a fast-track tournament (28 players). Fellow and Matison finished the tournament with 25.5 points. An additional match with 2: 1 was won by Fool. 3. V Petrov - 22 points.

At the end of February, Jefim Bogoljubov, grandmaster of Riga, "stayed on the invitation of the Riga Shah Club for several days on invitation from Russia to Germany. In the Feb. 28 simultaneous session, the guest fought against 43 players for 6.5 hours: + 22-14 = 7 (59.3%), but ended the serious match with H. Matison in a draw.

Salmins p. 19

Pirmdien, 1. marta otrs Latvijas stiprâkais spçlçtâjs devâs cîòâ ar Bogoljubovu. Îeguvis no paða sâkuma uzbrukumu, Apsenieks ilgi turçja lielmeistaru spîlçs un bûtu uzvarçjis, ja nebûtu par agru nomainîjis figûras, lai gan ar to iemantoja bandinieku, bet sekojoðâ galu spçlç lielmeistars caur spîdoðu spçli panâca uzvaru. Pçc spçles beigâm Bogoljubovs izteicâs ïoti labi par mûsu spçjâm un savu partiju pret Apsenieku uzskatîja par grûtâko, kâdu jebkad spçlçjis.

Jâpiekrît, ka ðâds vçrtçjums nebija tikai viesa pieklâjîbas frâzes.

On Monday, March 1, Latvia's second strongest player went on to fight Bogoljubov. Having been attacked from the outset, Apseieks had held the Grand Master for a long time and would have won if he had not changed his shapes too early, although he did gain a pawn, and in the next game the Grand Master won by shining play. At the end of the game, Bogoljubov spoke very well of our abilities and considered his game against Apsenieks the toughest he had ever played.

It must be admitted that such a rating was not just a phrase of guest politeness.
