Munich 1906 Altmunchen Club tournament

Munich 1906 (6-24 November) Altmunchen Club tournament

The chess club Altmunchen had its general meeting on 20 October 1906. On that occasion lieutenant E.v. Parish donated 200 marks for a small double round robin tournament between David Przepiorka, Rudolf Spielmann, Erich Cohn, Arthur Kurschner, Moisei Elyashiv, and Aron Nimzowitsch. Although several of the participants later became prominent players, they were not yet what they would be. Nimzowitsch, especially, was by no means expected to win the tournament. The prizes were modest with first prize only one tenth of the first prize in Barmen, which had been 1000 marks. On that account this tournament might be ranked as a "minor local tournament."

Altmunchen was the dominant club in Munich at the time and had 115 members of which 29 were from out of town. Nimzowitsch probably remained a mamber of the club during his stay in Zurich, because some of his games continued to appear in the "Munchener Neuste Nachtichten."
