Deviņdesmito gadu nogalē, šķiet, neklātienes cīņās iesaistījies Janis Tontegode (Viesalgi). Baltijas šahistu sarakstā, kas publicēts Baltische Schachblatter, Heft 8 (1902) pielikumā, viņš minēts Vidzemes (Livland) guberņas šahistu sarakstā. Savukārt laikraksts 'Duna - Zeitung' 1899, gada vidū, publicējot Tontegodes uzdevumu - divvilci, autora uzvārdem pievienojis vietas norādi Kurland.

In the late 1890s, Janis Tontegode (Viesalgi) was active in international correspondence chess. He is mentioned in the list of chess players in the province of Livonia, Latvia in the list of Baltic chess players, published in the appendix of Heft 8 (1902) by Baltische Schachblatter. The newspaper 'Duna - Zeitung' published two of Totengode's games in 1899, listing the province of Kurland (Courland) as a region in which Totengode was active in chess at that time.

Not only did Tontegode actively play correspondence chess, he also took on the organization of the tournament.

"The well-known chess player Mr Tontegode (Kurzeme, Viesalgi, via Kuldiga) is hosting a correspondence tournament for fans. Participation fee (donation) - 3 rubles. "
